Job Title: IDS Intern

The Role
- Role Description
Consisted of mainly project management on IT related projects, helping to implement new processes into the actual business. I worked with people from all over the world mostly through telephone/internet meetings.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
It was hard work, but I enjoyed the challenge and everything came together in the end ending in a real sense of satisfaction.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Those who I worked directly with were not in the country, but other people from outside my project team (apart from my manager) became good friends in the 3 months I was there.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I worked very closely with my manager as she was on the same project team, and when things started to get difficult she was very supportive and helped me to get through it.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Sometimes I was too busy, sometimes I wasn't busy enough but overall it was quite a good workload.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was basically in charge of creating and rolling out a whole new process to all P&G sites, it is quite scary!
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The project management skills I've developed have really helped me with my studies (particularly organising my dissertation) and I gained more confidence speaking with strangers and giving presentations. Genuinely felt like a different person when I left.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
In my particular department there was not very much going on, but in the rest of the office and particuarly the social life amongst younger colleagues there was a lot of fun to be had. There are wiis on all floors, there is always someone to talk to and they organise things like nights out and meals all the time.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
My only compaint, one of the projects I was handed was found to be impossible to deliver in the end and I spent a month struggling with it which was very stressful. This could have been avoided if it was better researched.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
We had training days, and colleagues and recruitment managers were always around to give advice and feedback at short notice.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Working from home
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I received a job offer after my final presentation.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
We all lived together in halls of residence so we became very close.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Newcastle is cheap but we tended to go to quite expensive bars on work nights out, not student nights which are far cheaper!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Pretty good, lots of generic house music and R&B if that's your scene then brilliant. Otherwise if you are looking for something a bit more niche you may not find it that great!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
