Job Title: Player Support Advisor

Overall Rated 8.0

★★★★★★★★☆☆

The Role

Role Description

Supporting and moderating the in-game community. Provide support and assistance by helping to manage a report queue and reviewing account and ban appeals.

Acquired an additional role of Bug Tracker – reviewing and acting upon potential game-related bugs sent in by users that could potential jeopardise the integrity of Jagex and/or RuneScape and escalating them appropriately.

Acquired an additional role of Bug Tracking Specialist – producing a weekly rota for the team, writing up weekly Bug Tracking admin reports for senior members of the company and assisting team with any issues they may have in regards to game-related bugs.

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Upon starting at Jagex, it was not what I had initially expected, but quickly learnt that your time at Jagex is really what you make of it. If you would like to persue a more technical or business-oriented role, then that is your perogative and you are enouraged and assisted by the company as much as they possibly can.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

I felt on a daily basis that the work I was doing in any of my roles was vastly important and contributed greatly to the running of the business. This is something I very much commend Jagex on.

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

Every three months your manager would have a one-to-one with every member in their team and discuss how everything is going and if there is anything that would like to try and accomplish that you have not yet. I found this to be very comforting and reassuring as it makes you feel that your seniors really do care and are continually striving to help boost your time at Jagex and make it as worth while for you as possible.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Since I had three different roles within the company, I was always busy. If my workload for one particular role had been completed then I could always carry out work on another role.

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

During the last 6 months of my placement, I was given the role of Bug Tracking Specialist within the Player Support team. This meant I had to manage my own teams performance, write up a weekly rota and be a point-of-contact for the team if anyone had any issues they needed to raise.

It is because of this opportunity that Jagex gave me that I now know what type of career I want to persue upon graduation. I would like to go toward Project Management, as it was something that I thoroughly enjoyed and felt much pride doing. This type of work experience is invaluable as it really sets you up for bigger things.

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Not in all aspects (such as the online moderation side of the job), but with my Bug Tracking and Specialist role I received it has definitely paved the way for me in what I want to do upon graduation.

In regards to my degree now, in my second year I studied a few modules relating to bug tracking and quality assurance. Had it not of been for these modules, I would not of had the technical background and as a result might not have acquired a Bug Tracking and Specialist role at Jagex.

The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

The atmosphere was always a nice, laid back, yet professional atmosphere. I think the fact that the dress code was always a casual one definitely helped provide this great atmosphere.

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

This was very good. The placements were split in to a few groups spread over the summer months and there was a special Training Team set up in the office just for the new starters in the company. This was nice as it didn't feel like we were just boxed in to an already filled office, but they had taken the time and effort to make space for us and warmly welcome us.

The training, which lasted 4 weeks, was all on a rota and everything we needed to know/do was set up in an organised manner.

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

This was something that the company felt greatly upon. They wanted us to develop our skills as much as we wanted to. If there was something you were particularly interested within the company but were not fully qualified to work in, such as in Graphics, then it could be arranged by your manager to go and observe the work that the Graphics team do for a half hour or so. This gives you more of an insight in to what goes on in this particular area and how they carry out the work they do.

10. What were the perks on your work placement?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

  • Subsidised/Company Gym
  • Company Parties/Events
  • Staff Sales/Staff Shop
  • Healthcare/Dental
11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

After spending a year at Jagex, I know how the company operates and the different kind of interesting roles within the company. Upon graduation, if I do see an employment opportunity at Jagex then I will definitely take it. That is if I am not offered back to work after graduation by the company anyway!

Other Information

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

All of the placement students and staff I met and worked with were all very kind and friendly. We regularly went out after work or on weekends for a drink or bite to eat. If anyone were to work at Jagex, I see no problem in them fitting in with other staff and having a great social experience with them.

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

The cost of living was about standard to anywhere. Personally, my rent was £350 a month (not inc. bills). At the end of the month I always had enough money to pay my bills and extra to spend on myself!

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Rated 6/10

The nightlife was acceptable. There are not an enormous amount of pubs/clubs, but there are enough for it to stay fresh.

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

Although I did not personally, there are activities you can get involved in.

In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?

If you are a little unsure of the kind of career you would like to follow and would like to work in a nice, friendly atmosphere with lots of friend, unique faces then I would definitely recommend an internship at Jagex. My time at Jagex helped me realise what I want to do with the rest of my life. I had a blast whilst doing it too!
