The Role
- Role Description
System scanning for vulnerabilities eg missing patches.
Managing SOX audits of applications and physical access to rooms.
Roll out of policies.
Ensuring we have have appropriate equipment if we need to image a hard drive - if data leakage investigation.
Was involved in a data leakage investigation.
Presentations to new employees regarding important IT Security Issues.- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Interesting and have developed a lot through year.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Made to feel part of a team - not " just an intern"
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
If you ask for help they will give it
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
It varied, if you don't have enough work ask for more, if too much just say your struggling.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Given a variety of tasks. Got to run and manage a few from start to finish.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I am going to do my final year project on Data Leakage and have managed to get free licenses for a piece of software I use at GE to use for my project. The skills I learnt at GE were also soft skills - such as presenting and facilitating. My confidence has greatly increased. It will also look good on my CV to say that I worked for GE one of the biggest companies in the world. I will be applying for the graduate scheme.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Varied - sometimes busy and people running around when a critical problem with a system! Some days quiet, other days busy!
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Organised well.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
All interns are sent on 3 courses: Presentation skills, Facilitation and Influencing Skills. Really helped develop my confidence overall.
I am not particulary technical so I got to develope in this area - as I asked to. My manager very helpful with anything I had queries about , within work or general IT issues. Also very supportive with helping me decide on a project idea for my final year at uni. He is also the reason I managed to get permission to use the data leakage prevention tool for my tool. - 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I am going to apply but I know the graduate scheme is very competitive as it is for GE Capital and not only GE Money Home Lending. I would love to come back though - but given the current "credit crunch" we will see.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
A lot of socialising with fellow interns. With colleagues too but not as much. Have made some really good friends within my office.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Watford / London is quite pricey!! Especially as no going out on student nights etc! Housing is fairly pricey too - make sure you look around as I got a good deal in the end.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Watford is ok - not amazing - but london is only 20mins on train, and London is awesome!!
Watford has some really nice bars and restaurants that I didn't discover until a couple of weeks til the end of the placement - so research! - 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Can get involved in volunteering events through GE Volunteers. I know that some of the guys play football and cricket with their teams!
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
do it!
