The Role
- Role Description
I had to check the accounts of companies to make sure there were no errors, checking to make sure accounts were properly recorded where they have been transfered from different accounting packages, interviewing clients to find out the processes of their accounting techniques, writing up documents that explain and justify the use of accounting techniques and to assure that the accounts present a true and fair view of the financial position of the firm.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I was made to feel really welcome in the office! It was a very social and relaxing environment with plenty of social events available to get to know others in the office.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone was willing to help and answer any questions that I may have had! They were also really interested in how things were going and just getting to know me!
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
All doors were open with any queries or problems I may have been having with regard to the placement in general or with the work that I was assigned!
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Everyday was different, with some days being really busy and having to finish work slightly later than planned or days when there wasn't much to do! In all I never felt like I was sitting around having nothing to do which is good as you are there to learn and experience!
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
As an intern I felt like I was given quite a lot of responsibility with regard to some of the tasks that I was set! This is really encouraging as it shows that they can trust you, but also really nerving as you don't won't to mess it up!
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
In terms of assisting me in my studies, I really don't believe it will assist me at all, however, it will definately assist me with my future career as I will be able to start with some knowledge of how things are done instead of starting from scratch!
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It was a very relaxed environment with people laughing and joking and pranks being made between colleagues! There were also occassions when everyone went out to have lunch at a restaurant which was a nice change!
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
It was a very well organised programme, where as part of the internship we had to complete a seperate project in groups, who were also doing the internship programme but from other offices, and present it to some of the partners in a dragons den style format! Also, before we started we were made aware of the clients we would be working on and who we would be working with so that we were prepared before we started! We also had a weeks residential training in a hotel so that we knew the basics before we started!
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
We had a weeks residential training before we started so that we knew the basics before we started! We were put up in a hotel with all expenses and food paid for, with a great chance to meet knew people who were also on the internship programme! We were also assigned a buddy and mentor who would check on our progress and make sure everything was going well and that any issues were resolved throughout the programme!
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I was offered a place once I have graduated providing that I achieve at least a 2:1!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
We had a chanve to meet up twice during the programme with other students who we met at the induction week! During this time we were able to work on the group project but we also went out and dinner together!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
It wasn't cheap, but we were earning money so not too much of a problem!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Didn't have much of a chance to experience the nightlife as I had a long journey home after work!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Yes! They have many different social and sporting groups e.g. football and cricket teams!
