The Role
- Role Description
My main tasks during my time at Ministry was helping to handle the mailout of all the promo cds for each new release, this included basic packing and mailing to actually writing the PR letter that went out with the CDs and making the CDs (making sure all the tracklisting was correct, etc). As well as this I was also helping to update the mail-out databases and seeking out new opportunities for the promotion of their music.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Although the work was not always the most challenging or exciting the atmosphere in the office and the general experience made this placement really enjoyable.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
The team i was working with made every effort to include me within the group and also as I didn't actually sit with them the others in the office all made an effort to do this as well.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I would say they definitely helped me with any problems I had and have already offered to help me get a permanent job in the music business. The HR department have already given me good links to recruitment companies and have given me some guidance in how to apply.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Depending on what day it was depended on how much work was available to do. I would say on the whole that I only found myself snowed under or just left bored with nothing to do a couple of times and even then it still felt like a relaxed atmosphere and there was normally something to do, even if this was away from the A&R department.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Obviously at first the placement was fairly limiting in terms of responsibility, but as time went out I was given more things to be trusted with. This included writing the PR letter that was mailed to every dj on the mailing list to promote the artist, tune and release. These are pretty important as they must make the dj want to play and support the tune and for the radio djs it gives them most of the information they will use to talk up the record. I was also given the task of helping to find new avenues for promotion, in terms of deals with chain clubs, bars etc and making sure the djs are actually pushing the music we send out.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
This doesn't apply to me as I've already finished my degree.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It was also a good place to work, full of banter and a general good atmosphere.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
It was fairly well organised.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
There wasn't much training for development available in this role. However I probably wasn't there long enough to warrant any real development
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- There were no perks with this placement year
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I would love to get some kind of full time employment with this company.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
For some of the other areas in the business there seemed to be a lot bigger social scene than was apparent in A&R
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Due to it being an unpaid internship I didn't really have enough to socialize in London and I just lived at home.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
As it has one of the best clubs in the UK at the place I was working for, you could say it was fairly good!!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Yes, they gave me a chance to get involved in helping to test out their new dj school with some of the biggest names in teh industry and was also ask to help run some of their clubnights they do around the country.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
not really!
