The Role
- Role Description
Strategically and Creatively planning television campaigns for the Disney Channel foreign markets.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
It was one of the best things i have ever done. Everyday I was excited to go to work. Working for such a fun company was brilliant. I worked for the Disney Channel division so it was phenomenal to get the chance to work for a television company. In my placement I learnt the ins and outs of how a television company works. It was crazy learning the amount of planning and work that goes into it.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I really didn't feel like an intern. My team welcome me and I really felt like i was part of the team. Luckily I was working in a small team so i felt i was given a lot of attention. Im not exaggerating when i say I could ask to work with a better team.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I felt I worked with such an great team and manager. My manger was strict but she pushed me all the time. My manger wanted me to gain the most from my placement, so she always supported and gave me alot of work to do. I also had bi weekly catch up sessions with my manager to check my progress at work.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I worked in media planning for my internship, which involved construction and planning on air campaigns. My manager encouraged me to get involved with the process. I was given a lot of work to do. On a normal day I would be working on live briefs that needed to be completed and a lot of campaign research. Not forgetting often there was Disney screening of films and previews of future programming that was air on the channel.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
At first i was given minor roles, however as my time at disney progressed my manager gave me the chance to work on campaigns. I helped planned a lot of campaigns during my placement, and it was amazing to know that i was responsible for some of the campaigns that went out on television.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I never thought about working in the television industry until my placement. I had no idea what media planning was and now i know i want to focus my future career in this industry. One of the best skills i've learnt is, is effectively working in a team, and it's such an important thing to get on with everyone.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Im not lying when i say it was always a happy environment. Disney Channel had a professional environment, but it didn't feel corporate at all. It felt like a great place to work. On my desk I had a television and was encouraged to watch Disney Channel to understand the content more.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
I was the first intern on my department, so it was exciting for me and the team. The internship was greatly organized, and i always had something to do.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
My manager treated me as part of the team, so on a weekly basis i had to give presentations, set up for meetings, assist the team, as well as planning on air campaigns. All of this wouldn't have been achieved if i wasn't trained so well. If my manager wasn't around to help, the people around me were always willing.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Travel loan
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
It depends on how well you work with the team, i can honestly say i will be more than thrilled to return once I finish university.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
At Disney their is an intern community so you are never alone. The interns tend to stick together as during my placement we were all in the same boat. Its so much fun as we are all the same age/students, so we hang out at lunch together and enjoy the london life in the evening afterwork. I've actually come out of my internship with other intern friends who I remain in touch with.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
London is expensive, so london prices are expected everywhere you go. On site where i worked was a lot of food places and starbuck. As long as your sensible with your money, then you'll be fine.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
London is probably the best place to go out in. There is so much to see and do. The interns at disney frequently organized nights out in london, which were always the best nights.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
At Disney there is an intern social community. The community frequently organized nights out and things to do such as bowling.
