The Role
- Role Description
I was working on a departmental efficiency drive on a daily basis, analysing business cases and consolidating departmental budgets.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I really enjoyed the work atmosphere and meeting lots of new people. There was many other Interns on the same programme although we all worked in different departments. This meant that although I wasn't working with other Interns I was sitll able to make friends with them while working with experienced professionals within my team.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Some of my work changed the way that my team operated, for the better and although it was recognised, there remained a few members of the team who were reluctant to praise or acknowledge my work.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I was given support from my line manager who also made me aware of my wider support network of HR, my team and when required the Executive team.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I had a good volume of work to do throughout my time at RBS although there were times when there was little work available or my manager didn't delegate work to me which may have been challenging but there would have been no harm in guaging my response to the challenge.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was in charge of certain operational aspects within the team which was both challenging and enjoyable. In other aspects I was not given a lot of responsibility but I understand that this would be the case with most entry level graduate positions; with new starts being given responsibility but less responsibility than the rest of the team.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
My presentation and communication skills imporved a significant amount, I now feel comfortable to do any presentation that I am presented with. I also feel much more at ease on the phone.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
There were some charity events and off-site days but my department did not take part in the "dress-down-friday" that the rest of the office took advantage of.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
On the whole it was very well organised. Some imporvements could be made to the logistics of social events and unwanted pension payments.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Training courses were given where required.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
To my delight, I have secured a position on the 2012 graduate scheme
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
YES
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Fair.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
It was not quite as good as the nightlife in Glasgow but the Edinburgh nightlife and festival during August was a great experience!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Not many.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The pay is competitive and the hours of work are a standard 35-40 per week.
