The Role
- Role Description
- Processing stock loan income positions for the clients, reconciling UK manufactured Overseas Dividend tax documents (Appendix C), paying stock loan dividends for security lending positions
- Weekly upgrading the dividends system with positions' statuses and updates
- Maintaining and improving metrics, for clients' email volumes, time-driven activity-based costing, lender's pack, updating and presenting the daily dashboard.- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The internship was an amazing experience! The work was interesting and challenging, it boosted a lot my confidence as i was always trying to succeed on my goals. However, it was not only work and daily tasks that made the internship memorable, but also people who welcomed me and treating like a part of a big family. I met so many great and interesting people as well as made new friends.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
My colleges were great and interesting people who would always try to find some time to help me out in a struggle as well make my day feel like I'm having fun. However the most amazing feeling is when you teammates and management recognizes your effort and helps to develop further as a personality and a professional.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My VP, my manager and my buddy would always help me out in a struggle and would train me for additional tasks just to boost my knowledge. Even tough if in a busy periods they would not be able to help, there would always be someone in a team who would support you and help out. Thus no one in the team is left on his/her own - there's always some one to help.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
My work didn't have many specific deadlines, thus the performance would always depend on the individual. I liked that it's up to me to organize my time, thus i could find the ways how to use it the most efficiently with no pressure. The more you would do during the day, the more and better results you would have, which will always be recognized.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
In my team I was the person who would gather and analyse daily metrics of how my team is doing and present it to senior management. Also even as an intern I was given my own clients and with another teammate was working with the major client in order to resolve the issues arising between counterparties. It was a great feeling to have quite a high volume of responsibilities as it steepened my learning curve a lot.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
One of the major skills i gained is time management. Even though I would not have many deadlines, the projects on which I would be working would involve other people as well, thus I had to make sure that everyone made their part on time and we would meet deadlines. Furthermore, daily interaction with client via emails or phone boosted my communication skills a lot. Before coming to placement I had a fear of phone conversations as I was afraid to be not understood, however daily interference with clients boosted my confidence a lot. Furthermore, the provided training about process improvements as well as CV & interview workshops will help me a lot in my future life not only to find a good employment, but also to advise other people while representing the company.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The office and floor atmosphere was amazing as even though everyone would be working you could always feel buzz as someone would be talking or laughing. People were very friendly and helpful. If you would need help from someone senior, there's always an open door policy.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The internship was well organized with lots of training courses and social events. Belonging to the internship program was a great fun as you would spend a lot time with other peer interns and just feel more confident around people of your age and sharing similar ideas. Furthermore, when starting a placement it was made sure that you would have your own working space and people, like manager or buddy, who would support you through all the process and help you develop.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Most of the training courses were online, which would provide you with a flexibility to do them in your spare time of work. However, there would be a variety of interactive training commenced in groups, allowing you not only to learn more about the theory but also to see how it works in a field.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Majority of people who done the internship with the firm were also offered a Graduate Scheme, which was an amazing benefit saving your time on applications in the last year and allowing to focus on your degree.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The social interns life was really fun - we would go to training together, we would have lunch together and we would go out together. It was like working with a big group of friends who do most of things together.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
It was not that expensive, however during the placement we would go out and do things together probably far more than just being at uni. However, it was always worth the money and time.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
The financial district was in the city center having lots of clubs and bars around, thus before weekend everyone would usually just go to a bar for some social time and then go out in one of the clubs.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
The company had to offer a great range of life-balance activities such as diversity, nationality clubs, quizzes or charity comity. Everyone could find something that suits them. There was also quite a good gym to keep yourself fit and healthy after spending all day sitting at your desk.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I think everyone who is interested in professional life should apply for internships as it is not only a good start for your career which also opens an easier way to get into the industry, but also a very exciting and interesting opportunity to do something different on your summer holidays!
