The Role
- Role Description
Independent sales consultant. Recruiter and student manager.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I took part in the Southwestern Summer Program for three consecutive summers. Every year I learnt something different. My first summer I learnt how to sell and run my business; my second summer I learnt how to recruit, train and manage a team; and my last summer I learnt how to maange managers. So, in my three years in the business I improved in many different levels.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
The number 1 reason why I chose to the program in the first placa was because I thought it would look great in my CV. The main reason why I decided two do it for another two years was because of the people I had the priviledge to work with. Everyone is so positive, hard-working and driven. I always felt very valued and appreciated.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
From when I was first recruited to my last day of my third summer, I always received constant support. I had the chance to work with great mentors who were always willing to give me advice and on whom I can always count on.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
The day is quite busy and I never had a chance to get bored.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
The best thing about the Southwestern summer program is that every year your role and responsability increases. My first summer I was only in charge of myself; my seconf summer I had to look after my personal team as well as assist my Organizational Leader to look after our students, and my third summer I was in charge of an entire organization.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I would recoomend every student who gets exposed to the program to take part in it.Doing SW I learnt everything from communication , time and money management, recruiting and training, as well as leadership skills.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
we had to work by ourselves during the day but all the SW events I've taken part in, have been some of the most amazing and exiting events ever.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
I knew exactly what I needed to do in order to succeed in this program. I was provided with all the materials, coaching and support necessary at all times. I would say everything was quite well organised.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
All the seminars I've attended over the last three years have been very beneficial in terms of preparing me for my summer jon but most imporatntly in terms of promoting the right principles to do succeed on a professional and personal level.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- National Travel
- International Travel
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Very appealing. There's a graduate scheme offered to all students who get promoted to Sales Managers and there is also a chance to work with a sister company.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
In my three years at university, SW socials and get togethers stand out like a lighthouse, I took part in so many great events in the US, in the UK and an incentive trip in Gambia, Africa. It's one of those programs where you get greatly paid off for all your hard work.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
We were encouraged to keep our costs real low during the summer so we could come home with a decent amount of money saved up.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Bets nights out ever. Sw students know how to work hard and party hard. The kind of people you want to be sorrounded by! :)
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There certanly were. Every year after the summer job ends the students who qualify go on an incentive trip to Africa. Everyone who takes part in the summer program attends The Award Banquet where students and their parents attend a prestigious ceremony at The Hilton Hotel in Edinburgh. Also, everyone who gets selected to come back as a student manager takes part in what we call the Leadership Weekend, 3 days of outdoor activities where we have a chance to bond with our fellow students better. And this is just to mention a few.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
If you're looking for something challenging, where you can test yourself and get plenty of recognition for your hard work, with endless opportunites to get promoted, amazing people to get sorrounded by, amazing finacial benefits, lots of travelling all over the world, then teh Southwestern summer program might be exactly what you're looking for.
