The Role
- Role Description
Assisting players with resetting their passwords, answering all sorts of queries, posting on forums
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I was not expecting to gain much direct experience from this placement, as I had almost 10 years work experience prior to the start. However once I started, I was truly blown away by the passion and enthusiasm displayed by every member of staff. It is an office of people who truly love what they do, and can do it to an amazing standard.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Right from the start, you are treated as another member of the team not just a placement. Everyone is encouraged to develop and learn about areas that interest you, and you are soon making the decisions in those areas.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I had meetings with my immediate manager at least once a week, and the management team are always happy to set aside some time for you if you ask them. My manager was great at helping me develop weaker areas of my performance and really excelling in the stronger ones. I even spent a fair amount of time developing my skill sets that were totally unrelated to the role, but would help me get a job in the future.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
You are encouraged to perform as well as you can, part of that can be helping with projects outside your normal daily workload. However it is not forced on you, essentially you can take as little extra work as you want/are able to. The daily workload can vary depending on a large number of factors, but most of the time the days just fly by
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I gained responsibility as a lead for a specialist role, which meant co-ordinating and communicating with team members on all different shift patterns. As the year progressed, the number of times that the only people in the building were placement students grew. It was a really great feeling knowing that the placements were representing the company to the world.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I gained a great deal of skills and training sessions during the placement. I completed a 12 week leadership and management development course and had a number of extra training seminars each quarter in different areas like CV writing, interview and application process, time and project management to name a few.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
You work in a team of 6-12 people so you always have someone to gain help from or share experience with. We also had lots of team incentives to help achieve and celebrate excellent performance. There were times that I laughed so hard it hurt, but we ensured the work came first and got the job done while having some fun.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Very well established program that has been running for a good number of years. They also take on 20+ students each year so are used fixing the problems that can occur with moving to Cambridge, liaising with university tutors etc.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
As previously mentioned, I received a lot of personal development and was able to benefit from the diverse skill set that other colleagues have.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Sports and Social Club
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Above 25 days holiday
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Whilst I was not chosen as an ambassador, I received excellent feedback from my colleagues and management and will be reapplying once I graduate.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The way the shift patterns work, there was always something happening somewhere. Even just going to the pub, staff were really approachable and would make you feel really welcome even if you had just seen them in the office or spoke to them at the gym.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Cambridge is a fairly expensive place to live, however a bit of research or talking to the placements who have just finished help you know where to go to have a decent night.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Could be rather hit or miss. However if the night was a bad one, there was enough staff out to make the best of nearly every situation.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
From sports to board games, there was literately always something happening. There is an internal staff forums where things were suggested, or someone from your team would have an idea of something fun to do.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
This placement is one worth doing. Previous to this I had no desire about working in the games industry, and my degree is computer science. However there is so many areas of the business and they do everything in-house so you are bound to find something that you really love to do, and the company will help you excel at it!
