The Role
- Role Description
I would do things from lots and lots of individual calculations to working towards full scheme valuations, some accounting work, some notional accounts work. The list seems kind of endless!!
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The work started off quite easy at the beginning but the longer I worked there the more responsibility I was given with the work and it made it so much more interesting and genuinely fun!
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone really made an effort to make you feel welcome from the beginning and continued to do so throughout!
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I had 2 'buddies'/mentors who were there to ask the most silly of questions and then whoever gave me work was also always very willing to ask any questions you may have about what you're coin
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
In general it really was a perfect balance - I had lots of different work to do and so I was barely left twiddling my thumbs. Occasionally I had a tonne of work on but at least that gave me more of an insight into how it would be to really work there!
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
For the work I was doing I received more responsibility as time went on so that towards the end I was being set work with few/no instructions and left to it because they thought I could handle it.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
In terms of my degree I don't think it will help me much but nor did I expect my degree to be much help in terms of an actuarial job. However, it did help improve on a lot of aspects which I am sure to use as a graduate and for many years to come.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It was great! There were plenty of pub trips and a few socials thrown in there as well!
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Really well done, would thoroughly recommend an internship with them - everyone from the office I was working in to the HR department were spot on.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
We received quite a lot of training which was nice that they thought we were worth investing time/money/training into.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- National Travel
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Can't wait to start working for them!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
There were only three of us but I think we had a pretty good time together!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Pretty cheap socialising as we hardly ever had to pay for anything!!!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
It's a great city - I've been a student here for the last 3 years and loved it!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
In terms of the internship there wasn't much I could get involved in apart from socialising, however, if I had been working there I know I could have got involved in the Corporate Games or some community work for example.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
It was such a great place to work and a great company to work for, I couldn't recommend them highly enough!
