Job Title: BP Intern
Overall Rated 8.3
★★★★★★★★☆☆
The Role
- Role Description
I was an intern with the Engineering standards team in BP Shipping. The team handles design and construction standards for the BP Shipping fleet. My job consisted of two main projects.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
this is one of the best internship programmes in the industry. Many opportunities available and the people are always willing to give a helping hand.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Another aspect which helped was that my project was very relevant to the work that the rest of my team was doing.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Everyone helped, and if they couldn't, they would refer me to someone who could.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
The work load fluctuated - I was never too busy, there were times when I didn't have as much work to do but if I felt I needed something extra my manager was more than willing to help
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
quite alot compared with what you'd expect from an intern role.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Critical skills were achieved. Skills that gave me an idea of how the industry actually works and how an office is run (things which are sometimes taken for granted). I will definitely return to my degree a step above with all that I've learnt.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
A good mix - not too busy but not dull either. Enough quiet so that you are able to concentrate on your work
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
A good, organised setup - giving you the required basic knowledge of how the company work and all the opportunities you'd want available.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
there were a number of courses made available to me from which I could acquire a variation of skills.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Sports and Social Club
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Working from home
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Many opportunities available throughout all departments in the company.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
We managed to organise activities and events very regularly throughout the placement.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I didn't socialise near the workplace but more in the area I was living in. The heart of London isn't the cheapest of places and I think anyone would agree. That isn't to say that socialising is difficult - far from it
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
The area I worked in was very quiet but I enjoyed lots of good nightlife in the centre of London which is where I was living.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Wide variety of events!
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Definitely a placement to apply for - it prepared me for the industry
