The Role
- Role Description
Providing support to team daily work and projects. Completing objectives set out by manager that include delivering a presentation, identifying and improving a process, creating management information statistic trackers. I also carried out asset creation/maintenance and reconciliation reports.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I gained great exposure to operations area of the investment bank. I was always kept busy but never out of my capabilities. I learned loads about the business and developed my
Skills greatly. - 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I was welcomed into the team and made to feel a part. The work I was given was important to the business meaning thatni was contributing and not just doing it for the ale of being kept busy.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I had a buddy who I worked will on a daily basis and I met my manager every week for a catch. However I could ask anyone anything at any time and they were always happy to help.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I had objectives and daily tasks to be getting on with so I never really had time
Doing nothing. - 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Once I had learned the ropes I was left with tasks to
Complete on my own. I also undertook my own project that was completely mine and seen through from start to finish. - 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Not only did I learn about the business I develop skills in excel, communication skills including presentation skills, networking and organisational skills. I also developed myself as a person learning more about me and how I cope with working life.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Very energetic and busy office. There was good morale .
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
It was the first time in Glasgow so there is room for improvement however the workload was well thought out and some activities where planned for us as a group. There could be some
More though. - 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Time was taken in pre-learning, the induction week in London and ongoing throughout the summer. As each department is different there is no structure however there was loads of support to ensure I knew what I was doing and that I had grasped the necessities.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- National Travel
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I have accepted the offer to go onto the grad scheme once my degree is finished next year
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The group of interns felled really well and we found ourselves socialising regularly.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Compared to London - value for money! As I study in Glasgow there was no change to where I lived etc.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Glasgow is a great night out!!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
We took part in a treasure hunt ran by the events team and. Volunteer day!
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Barcap run an initiative where you meet with directors and MDs of the company to ask them
About their careers, business areas and experiences. This is a great opportunity as the exposure you get is invaluable - you learn about areas outwith your own and the advice the people
Have given is brilliant. You would not get this experience just as an analyst!
