Job Title: Retirement Intern

The Role
- Role Description
I worked in the Defined Benefit Pensions team. My daily tasks included calculating indivivdual pension amounts and calculating transfer values. I was regularly using Excel and specialised pensions software. The work was extremely varied.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I thoroughly enjoyed my six week placement with Towers Watson. The work was challenging and plentiful. There was a vibrant atmosphere in the office
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone in the office was extremely friendly and approachable. Questions were actively encouraged and there was never a point when I felt like I was a nuisance. I was never given meaningless work and all my work was appreciated by my colleagues.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
A Line Manager was assigned to each intern which made it extremely easy to get settled. My Line Manager was always available to answer any questions I had.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Naturally every day was different but there was never a day when I was bored or one where i had to stay too late in the office.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I felt I was given a good level of responsibility. All the work I did was valuable to the team and company and was always appreciated by colleagues. Interns with Towers Watson will never find themselves doing meaningless work.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
As I'm studying Actuarial Science the work I did will really benefit me in my studies. The training Towers Watson gives to interns is similar to that given to new graduates and is extremely beneficial. However, most of what I learned was work-based learning which I found to be an extremely effective way of learning. The experience I gained will also stand to me when I enter the workplace.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The large, modern, open-plan office had a vibrant atmosphere. Naturally everyone was working hard, but there was always talk and laughter to be heard. This atmosphere allowed me to settle in very quickly.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The placement was very well organised. Every event from the induction day to our final day was well planned and ran smoothly.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
The training Towers Watson gave was exemplary. We were given detailed notes and examples which were thoroughly explained by those giving the training. An average training session on a single topic lasted three hours which was a sizable investment by the company.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- National Travel
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Employment prospects with Towers Watson are very appealing. Many summer interns are offered graduate positions for the following year.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The social aspects of the internship were wonderful. There were regualar after work drinks including celebratory exam drinks. We went to a cricket match at the Oval and competed in a rounders competition between the various teams in the office. On our final evening, we organised a pub quiz for the team which was well attended and very enjoyable. The strong social culture makes it very easy to fit in.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I lived in London and commuted to the office (50 mins from Waterloo)so naturally living expenses were quite high, however having never lived in London the extra expense was worth it given the amount going on in London. Reigate is not cheap, but is far cheaper than London.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
The nightlife in Reigate is quiet. However nights out were still great fun because of how sociable everyone is. London's nightlife is amazing, but can be very expensive depending on where you go.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There were a number of activities which we were encouraged to get involved in, the rounders competition and indoor soccer being the two I enjoyed the most.
