Job Title: Undergraduate Assistant In Lighting/Structures

Overall Rated 6.9

★★★★★★★☆☆☆

The Role

Role Description

Assisted the design team with various projects. My roles included producing drawings and bills, organising company events and inspecting and reporting on structural defects.

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

As a result of a reduced budget for the year, there was substantially less work for the students compared to my previous placements with the company.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

I shared a great relationship with my colleagues. Everyone made me feel welcome and appreciated.

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Working as part of a small team, I had a lot of involvement with my managers and they were always on hand to offer guidance and assistance when it was needed.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

The level of worked varied throughout the summer. There were times when I was trying to balance a number of different projects at once and others when I was sitting about trying to find some work to keep me occupied.

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Rated 6/10

I was given the responsibility to complete structure inspection reports that would be sent to the client. I relished the oppertunity to become involved with such a procedure.

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Rated 6/10

I have developed my organisational skills over the course of the summer due to the type of work that I have been involved with. These will undoubtedly come in useful during my forthcoming degree year at university.

The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Everyone in the office was friendly and approachable. This definitely made my time with Amey more enjoyable.

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

I would say that the placement was less well organised than in previous years. As much as switching over department mid way through the placement is a good idea to broaded the experience, I felt it resulted in not spending enough time in one deprtment to get fully involved with a detailed piece of work.

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

My colleagues provided plenty of excellent advice about going towards professional accreditation in future. I was also invited along to a number of CPD events over the summer.

10. What were the perks on your work placement?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

  • Company Parties/Events
11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

I have enjoyed each of my periods of employment with Amey thus far and I would be greatful of the chance to make my employment permanent.

Other Information

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

I was made to feel like a proper part of the team by being invited along to social events. I already knew the other students from University and I feel that the summer has served as a successful team building excersise.

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

I stayed at home so I had minimal expenses. It is relatively cheap to socialise in the Glasgow area in comparison to other major cities.

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Glasgow is busy no matter what night of the week it is. There are always plenty of offers aimed at students.

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

We organised our own sporting activities such as football and badminton which I regularly got involved in.
