Job Title: Operations Intern

The Role
- Role Description
Part of project team in Operations Engineering, working to 'Change the Bank'.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
With role responsibilities, Lunch n Learn sessions, intern project and E-Learning sessions there was plenty to get involved with, creating plenty of networking opportunities.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Great team to work with, everyone is very friendly and happy to spend time with you to help your learning. Most give you work that does add value.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Manager was brilliant, always able to spare time to take me through procedures, show me what he was doing, explain anything I hadn't quite grasped. He encouraged others to work with me in order to broaden my knowledge and always checked that I had plenty to do.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Workload increased throughout the internship; as my knowledge grew I was able to take on more tasks myself. There were quieter days obviously when I had some down time to complete a quick e-learning course or research something I had heard mentioned and wanted to know more on. But on occassions I would be continuously working throughout the day.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
There were certain tasks that I fully owned and had to report progress back to the Project Manager at daily meetings. Other tasks were simply supporting the experts.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Teamwork and communication were the main ones in this role. Developed through both day to day work tasks and extra intern projects.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Relaxed but focussed. I was encouraged to walk around the office when I needed to speak to someone rather than emailing people across the room. My team were very friendly and interesting.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
From initial training, through the various learning activities over the internship up to the closing breakfast, the internship was very well structured and organised.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Initial training on financial markets/products, Lunch and Learn sessions with some quite senior people in the bank, vast amount of online e-learning courses.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- There were no perks with this internship
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Chance to progress straight on to Graduate Scheme in a year's time for most interns (depending on graduate spaces available obviously). Would definitely return to RBC if given an offer.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Plenty of socialising with the 40 odd interns, team drinks etc.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Obviously in the City drinks and living etc are as pricey as expected but not outrageous. (There are still Wetherspoons'!)
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
It's London...
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
HR events and intern projects were a nice opportunity to get away from your desk for an hour or two.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The Lunch n Learns in particular are a great way to get to understand the other areas within the bank that you're not working in. Plus give you a contact in that area if you're particularly interested and want to find out more. Everyone is very friendly and happy to help.

Internship Questions & Answers
-
Hi Mate!
Thank you for your review!
I have AC next week.
I just wanted to ask how did you find the interviews. Did they ask many commercial awareness questions? Was it based on competency questions?
How did you find the group excercise? Is it about a general business topic or about Operations?
Thank you for your help!Cheers,
DanQuestion asked by a RateMyPlacement user on 4th May 2012

Hey Dan!
Well done, mine was over a year ago now but this is what I can remember...
- The main interview was with 2 guys from Operations. It was pretty much all competency based question, focussing on teamwork, communication, time management, problems solving and the usual things. They also asked why I had chosen RBC but not much more about the company. And they asked why I had chosen Operations and why I thought I was suited to it. They were looking for general commercial awareness but didn't go into much detail.
- The group exercise we were given a pile of newspapers from which we had to choose a current story to discuss then present 3 points about it. If you don't know much about the topic your group talks about (like I didn't!) just make sure you get involved some other way like note taking.
Does that help much?
Nicola
