Job Title: IT Consultant

The Role
- Role Description
Duties differed from the various projects worked on, I had some excellent exposure to working in the following capacities:
- Project Management
- Large scale project lifecycles
- Software testing
- Bid authoring
- Delivery management
=- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Great placement, great people and would highly recommend to anyone trying to find a career in IT or Business.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone I interacted with was absolutley professional & very welcoming, they were always on hand to give advice and provide help.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
It depends on how you wish to approach it. If your expecting to be spoon-fed then this (and many other major organisations) may be not for you. However, if you approach other employees and ask questions - after introducing yourself - you will gain excellent advice and create a great network of contacts.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
The year flew by to be honest, when involved with projects time just goes so quick. Towards the end of the placement there were a couple of weeks which were quiet due to me leaving and no suitable work for the short period of time. Compeletely understandable.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was NOT running the show!!!!! I was given a fantastic amount of responsibility, however, one of the absolute highlights of my year at Logica. They gave me a lot of self-belief, confidence and helped create a determination to give something back to them for investing in me. Every staff member was enthusiastic and expected more from me, rather than being pesimistic and adopting the attitude of "he's a placement student, we had better give this to someone else". A great experience, one of the many reasons I would go back to them.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The experience alone has helped my approach to planning my career. It has given me the confidence of outlining what I want to do and pursuing it with confidence, which whilst still in my final year, is a great feeling to have. I will take the project management skills that I developed, over to my final year and try to apply them to my own projects. The whole experience of working for a very well respected company such as Logica, has already had a positive impact on my CV and for me personally, I can honestly say it is a company that I have thoroughly enjoyed working for and very thankful that I made the most out of my placement year with them. Highly recommended!
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It was quiet at times.... until some of the Director's showed up and it turned in to a Comedy Club!! Sometimes if you are not a project and do not know the personnel around you very well, it can become a bit quiet.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Overall it was very good. Project allocations could be done a bit better, however, its good practice to approach staff yourself and to get involved without being 'spoon-fed' project work.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
In terms of training & development, it is really down to yourself. The company does not invest in training for placement students (understandable since you are not a 'permanent' member of staff) however, there is an online training programme to get up to speed with anything from C++, ASP.NET to PRINCE2 Project Management foundation level. Its down to your intiative and how much you want to push yourself to learn and develop, all the resources you require are there.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Company Parties/Events
- Working from home
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
At christmas it was looking good for a graduate scheme with Logica. However, due to the changing market and their own business restructure, there have been some redundancies, which means they cannot offer a Grad Scheme at the moment. That doesn't mean I shouldn't stay in contact with them and ask them again in a few months...
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Excellent social scene, always something happening either formally or informally amoungst Grads & placement students. We even had a Graduate Ball, organised at meals paid for by Logica at the BAFTA's!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Leatherhead not so good, although it was fine for lunch time. When working in Central London, I don't think I need to say anymore - you have every facility imageinable at your doorstep, fantastic place to work. The myth of being too expensive can be argued, Leatherhead is expensive in places, Central London, however, has plenty of places to eat and drink which are excellent value. Porterhouse & Maple Leaf in Covent Garden are just some of the classic venues for value for money.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Leatherhead.... lets give that a miss!! Central London and the area I lived in (Kingston Upon Thames) absolutely brilliant. Hustle & bustle of London and you have the chilled out student scene of Kingston, great mix.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Endless. Football, gym, squash, boat/river cruises, charity runs/bike rides, beach is 2 hours away in Bournemouth, ice skating during winter in Hyde Park, cinema & theatre - the list goes on.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
When working for Logica, you never have just perform the same role. You can try different roles with the many, many projects that they have (depending on how far you want to go). Make the most of your year and rather than wait for people to talk to you, go and introduce yourself - it may seem nerveracking - but people there genuinly want to help you and if you can show a little initiative, they will give you endless amount of opportunities.
