Job Title: Analyst

Overall Rated 7.1

★★★★★★★☆☆☆

The Role

Role Description

Worked as a requirements gatherer for a large government project and as project office support .

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

The job was enjoyable, with challenging work and a great company atmosphere. Sometimes the work was repetitive, but that is life!

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

The vast majority of staff treated me with the respect that was deserved, being trusted with work based on my skills, not on my (lack of) experience. My role as project support meant a great deal of contact with all the project members.

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

I didn't need much support from management, however my staff manager was always available to talk to if I had any issues. Other departments within the company were always co-operative when I was trying to get a task done.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 4/10

Work patterns were erratic, again this is a result of the nature of the business, consultancy goes in cycles of hard work and plateaus - in this area of work this can't be helped, the only other situation would be to be overloaded continuously (like some other IT Consultancies).

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

I was responsible for several areas of the project, some dealing with the security aspects of running the project, something of paramount importance. I was also trusted to be a liaison with the customer at several points during my placement.

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

I received no formal training after the initial induction (which is very good), however, I picked up a good number of soft and technical skills while on placement.

The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Logica has a very good organisational culture, they value their staff and ensure that they are not being stretched to the limit. Different levels of staff communicate without barriers and are on the whole genuinely helpful. People worked hard, but the atmosphere is pretty relaxed.

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

The organisation of the placement is quite light touch, for those who desire or need structure, this placement may not suit them. After a week's induction / training, you are placed on a project and start work straight away. There is always the graduate team and your Staff manager on hand to help if things go wrong.

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

The company did not send me on any paid courses etc, however, it should be noted it is not cheap to have a placement student at all, and that the personal development gained through the placement should not be underestimated.

10. What were the perks on your work placement?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

  • Flexi Time
  • Company Parties/Events
  • Working from home
  • Travel loan
11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

The company is going through significant reconstruction which will ultimately should make it easier to get varying roles within the organisation. Additionally, the contacts you will build up over the year will be invaluable in finding a project.

Other Information

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Yes, every month there was a night out in London where we got together and had a good laugh. Day to day you will meet other students as the intake is quite large, There is also the annual student ball.

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Not bad, the prices were OK in London as I lived quite far out. The commutes to Leatherhead in later months were more costly in fuel and time.

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

London night life is amazing, there is a vast array of bars and clubs that are always a good night out at. For those based in Leatherhead, we normally just got the train to London as it is a dead town.

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

There was plenty of opportunities, although no personal experiences...

In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?

Overall the company is very good. As long as you get onto a good project (which most are) you will be given responsibility and varied work. The company may not be as ambitous(risky) in giving more senior positions to placement students (ie. team leaders), but this is not a bad thing, students as a rule had a good experience and balanced work/home relationship.
