The Role
- Role Description
A summer intern at the Glasgow branch of John Lewis. Involved in the general operations and the fulfilment of an individual project.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
There were many really excellent parts of this internship, but it was made really interesting because of the people I worked with.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone was very interested in the internship and really helped to give me as many opportunities as possible.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Support was given regularly with review sessions
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I was kept fairly busy throughout, however retail does tend to have busy and quiet periods. The quiet periods gave me opportunities to observe and learn a lot more about the business.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given responsibilities for some areas, particularly the completion of a project for presentation.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
An invaluable experience that gave me a great insight into one of the largest and most successful retailers.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Everyone was very sociable in the department and often went out together.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
This was the first time that the Glasgow John Lewis took part in a summer internship, there were some small areas that could maybe have been improved but these were marginal and overall the programme was very well managed.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I was given all the training available to other permanent employees and took part in a number of training activities.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
There are a lot of great opportunities
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
There were just the two of us and it was very short term
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I was living at home and commuting in
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Glasgow has excellent nightlife
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
If I had worked there longer there were many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of the branch.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Although it was only a six week internship there were many interesting experiences and was an invaluable insight into the workings of the company and branch. I also met a lot of very interesting and friendly people who made it more than just a learning experience.
