Job Title: Actuarial Intern

Overall Rated 8.5

★★★★★★★★★

The Role

Role Description

Mostly calculating individual's transfer values and other small calculations. This included drafting letters to send out to clients.

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

I was given a lot of work to do and everyone was very friendly.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

The office was very busy at the time so colleagues really appreciated the extra help. I also got involved in a lot of socials, which was a great way to get to know them.

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

They really left us to it but gave a good introduction at the start of the internship. I was also givn feedback on the final day which was really helpful.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 4/10

I was very busy. It was good because I got a really great insight into what the job is like on a day to day insight. There was also a good representation of what kind of work I would be expected to do as a graduate and the clients I could be working on.

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Rated 6/10

I wasn't given much responsibility but I think that's just the nature of the work. I did the work and then it had to go through a checker and a reviewer before being sent out. This was a relief though because when starting out you are going to make a lot of mistakes.

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

I learnt how to check my work and be more thorough so that will help me a lot in my final year of uni.

The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

The office had a very relaxed atmosphere yet there was a lways a lot of work being done. Everyone was very friendly. There is a dress down day every Friday which is a great end to the week.

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

Most of the induction stuff was organised centrally by HR. I particularly enjoyed being able to meet all the other interns from offices all over the country. We also had some training sessions organised by the office, teaching us how to use the internal software.

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

We had a lot of training and a lot of time was invested by colleagues explaining each piece of work to us. It didn't matter if we were slow doing the work , it was all about learning how to do it in the first place.

10. What were the perks on your work placement?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

  • National Travel
  • Company Parties/Events
11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

I have a job with them for when I finish university, so great!

Other Information

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

Most people went out for drinks every friday night. There was also a summer BBQ, which we (as Interns) had to organise, and a quarterly meeting. Both of these occasions involved most people in the office going out. The exam results day was also good. We spent the afternoon celebrating with the office!

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

It was quite expensive compared to the places you'd go to as a student. The company paid for the office events though and they also pay for accomodation if you live too far away from the office.

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

We were surrounded by bars and restaurants so you don't have to travel far.

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

There were a few, there was a men's football team. You can also get involved in the corporate games.

In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?

I had a great time and stayed an extra 2 weeks. I worked hard but it was a lot of fun.
