Job Title: Actuary Assistant
Overall Rated 7.7
★★★★★★★★☆☆
The Role
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I really enjoyed the buzz of the office environment, and I really enjoyed tackling real work. I looked forward to going to work every day.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Every colleague treated me with respect, and made themselves available with good support when needed. I was trusted with actual work, and was praised when I completed work.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
To a good extent; my manager checked up on me quite regularly, seeing what activities I was doing, which provided me with an opportunity to offer my views. From this stemmed occasional guidance.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I was sufficiently challenged, and most of the time I had small deadlines to balance. Occasionally I needed to pursue work, but this wasn't a real issue.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given actual work to do, which I could see through to the end. I felt trusted to complete work independently, but also not unsupported.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I learnt so much about what actuaries do, and I am continuing into the profession. In my final year, I have already drawn on my improved skills I developed during my placement.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The atmosphere was a good working atmosphere, but not so serious that you couldn't go over to talk to a colleague, or share an occasional laugh.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The overall internship scheme was quite well organised, but sometimes I and fellow interns were unsure of a couple of minor things. Feedback was clearly a very important thing for the company, and this was well integrated into the scheme.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
The company invested a lot of time with colleagues providing regular help with work that was new to me. In addition, numerous intern training sessions were held; and we attended the general training attended by other colleagues.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I'm very much looking forward to going back, and as I understand, prospects are good; responsibility increases with experience, and salary follows.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The social scene was good, relaxed, and I really enjoyed spending time with other interns.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I commuted from home over the course of my internship, but the cost of socialising was expected for London.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
London nightlife
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There were quite regular, and varied social events with colleagues.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hewitt to anyone interested in Actuarial work for an internship.
