Job Title: Manufacturing Leadership Summer Intern
Overall Rated 8.1
★★★★★★★★☆☆
The Role
- Role Description
I worked on afew projects, one of which was looking into improving a specific part of the manufacturing inspection process, which acted as a bottleneck for the rest of the fatory. I looked at why the problems arose, and built a system to monitor the progress, and provide feedback to the earlier stages of production what they could do to change which would benefit this area. I also did some lean manufacturing techniques, for example being involved in a kaizen project which aims at physical re-arrangement of resources to make work more efficient. I also organized the area further, ordering new equipment to improve the aesthetics.
Day to day tasks were monitoring part queues, filling in delivery information, analysisng information collected, laising with others, and investigating information to contribute to my projects.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I really enjoyed my time here, there is certainly an element of challenege, and you can extend projects as much as you like to provide the level of work you're comfortable with. I think perhaps if I had been more interested in the actual content of the job role, then I would have enjoyed it even more.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I felt like by the end of the placement I had made some very postive relationships, but they were very much still work colleagues. I felt valued, but not to the point of the people I work with feeling like family.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
All the support I wanted was given, however some of the time tracking people down in the first place to ask was very time consuming.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Towards the end of my placement I found I'd completed all my main tasks, and there wasn't much else to do that really got me interested, as the tasks were just bits and bobs here and there, but before that point the work balance was very good.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Not a huge amount, but I contributed to important projects with the managers, so my say and input had some level of responisibility. I think when running a company like Rolls-Royce though, it is probably best not to give too much responsibility to interns, something going wrong can cost easily over £50,000.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I gained a massive amount of life experince from this, and think thats the main thign I got out of this placement. I think rather than helping my studies, the placement has complimented them, allowing me to be more well rounded as an individual.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
There was a lot of banter, as I was on the shop floor, but that was okay with me, infact I quite enjoyed it. Sometimes people tended to actively avoid work for too long though, and could be a tad distracting.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
I don't think there was a grand plan for me when I started, and I did have to remind my managers of dealines for sorting out my development record, and often go looking for jobs, rather than be given them. The scheme is set up very well though, so despite that things went fairly smoothly, and I felt like I knew what I was meant to be doing most of the time.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
The company let me do lots of e-learning courses, as well as let me gain a qualification in lean manufacturing. Everyone had time for you to ask questions, and learning was encouraged at all times. I think the only improvement would be more formalized opportunities.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Very, working there for an internship helps massively with landing a job there later, and the company is incredible as a whole. I am not sure however manufacturing is the right career path for me, but I won't be put off applying to Rolls-Royce for other roles in the slightest.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The interns are all very close, and there are loads of us!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I stayed at home, so it was very cheap.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
I tended to go out in Nottingham, which I love.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Interns organized lots of events, and the company organized a few too, so there were a good selection yes, i.e. football tournament, loads of pub lunches and nights out.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The placement really does let you get your foot in the door, and even if you are uncertain about what exact role you want to do in the future, getting some experince with Rolls-Royce is well worth it. You get holiday pay, and the opportunity to land a graduate job too, so I'd reccomend the scheme to anyone who might be interested.
