Job Title: Electronics Summe Placement
Overall Rated 8.3
★★★★★★★★☆☆
The Role
- Role Description
I worked in a team with a handful of other Electronics Summer placements on four projects which were all at different stages of the design process.
This gave us an insight into each step of the design project and let us work in a variety of environments.- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The placement was very enjoyable. It was useful in deploying my degree knowledge into an industry situation.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
As Summer Placments we were invited to attend company briefs and team forums. This helped us integrate into the team and gave us an idea of what else was happening in the company. By attending these meetings I felt valued not just by my colleagues but by the company as well.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Although we worked on the projects on our own we were able to seek help and guidance from our Manager and the Graduates around us whenever we felt it was necessary.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
On a daily basis we were kept reasonably busy and had more than enough work to see us through the placement.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
As we were working on our own projects we were given a great deal of responsibility. Some of the projects we worked on had already begun development from other members of staff and it was up to us to make sure their work reached the next stage of development.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I gained a lot of experience on computer packages that are the standard througout industry. We scheduled regular meetings and this imporved my presentation skills as well as helping me improve my debating/discussion skills.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Although we were all busy there was a friendly atmosphere and there was always someone to have a conversation with.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The Engineering Department was well prepared for our arrival and the HR department were always in control and ready to deal with and problems that may arise.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
We were able to apply for training courses as well as given and insight into the formal development options that were available. Although the FD scheme is intended for a period of longer than 10 weeks.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Thye have a great graduate scheme which would help develop me both professionally and personally
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
We organised regular lunch and nightime excusrions with the other summer placements. Throughout all departments there were approx 20 - 30 Summer placements and a great mix of people.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
The area was about average to live in. Stevenage ahd a variety of cheap and expensive outlets.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
There are a great deal of pubs in Stevenage and a few nightclubs located very close to the site on the Stevenage leisure park. Although not up to the standard of a big city they were perfectly adequate for a large town.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
The company has a Sports and Social club which provides a range of clubs for staff to get involved in.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The placement is very valuable and gives a great insight to industry preactices. I highly reccomend it.
