The Role
- Role Description
Sat with associates and helped with various legal research tasks or more simple administrative tasks. Also was given work by other trainees. Went on various trips outside the office e.g. to court and to a client. Tasks would generally involve carrying out research tasks and writing up the results. Might also include taking notes on meetings, going to talks and accompanying lawyers on trips outside the office.
Overall, I was exposed to a wide range of tasks, giving a good impression of what life as a trainee would involve. I would highly recommend the scheme to anyone considering a career in law. The trip to Paris was a good bonus too!
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
It was an excellent scheme from start to finish. Very friendly staff and well organised HR department.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
People gave good feedback and found tasks which I could really contribute towards.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
This varied in the different departments, generally there is a very supportive atmosphere in the office though so if it wasn't directly from your supervisor there was definitely support from other people in the firm. I never felt out of my depth or at a loss as to what to do.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Had enough to do to keep me in the office but didn't have to stay late and was encouraged to make the most of the social side of the placement.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Some task were left to me, however, it was difficult to get really involved as much of the work was very complex. Certain easier tasks were, however, left entirely up to me which was a good experience.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Very useful insight into the world of large commercial firms. Has played a great role in stimulating thoughts as to my career path and has aided decisions as to which modules to take in my final year.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Fun office atmosphere among trainees and more senior lawyers. The office socials and Friday drinks trolleys were good fun.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Very well organised with events nicely spread out over the three weeks.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I felt that the firm really tried to give us a broad experience of life as an employee and put on a good selection of talks to teach us more about its major practice areas.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- International Travel
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Most nights people would be up for a drink after work and a number of us have kept in touch afterwards.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
It was as pricey as you would expect for a firm in the City.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Good night life in the area, short walk from Shoreditch High Street and Brick Lane and tubes to anywhere else in central London.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Plenty of sports opportunities available and a number of volunteering opportunities.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
It was a very enjoyable three weeks and would recommend it to anyone. The people were what made it, both within the firm and the others on the scheme. Generally relaxed but with a serious attitude to work, the atmosphere in the office was positive and fun.
