The Role
- Role Description
Worked in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications brach and looked through policies and rated them with comments on whether we would insure or not. I also did a lot of prospecting for the new business that the company could try to insure which involved research and communication between the other offices in the UK and listing where we could potentially look to increase our new business. As one of several interns i also took part in projects and trainning schemes with other interns and found new ways to improve the company which was then presented.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Very satisfying with a lot of good things that were taught. I felt like i was making an impact and doing something useful instead of just watching what someone else does. It was always engaging and challenging with lots to do and I could not find any areas that I could complain about. The experience and the atmosphere was great and I really thought that I was contributing.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone was very helpful and treated you like any other member of the business.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My supervisor presented me with a list of goals and objectives while i was also given lots of other jobs to get on with by other members of the team. It was easy to communicate with them when they were out of the office and my supervisor gave me a lot of freedom to get on with the work while also giving me other interesting things to do to keep my day to day schedule fresh and interesting.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Work would come in large amounts at variable times which meant that i had to work hard to meet certain deadlines but when there was not much to do, other members of the team were happy enough to send some of their workflow my way which i was happy to do which meant that i always had something that i could be doing.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given many projects that I worked on alone. I did research and created results for new business that were then sent to certain UK Offices that were not picking up many new companies to insure. I also helped find new areas in the market that we had not really looked into which meant that i had to travel to and from the London and Glasgow offices to take part in meetings with the results that i had researched. I really felt that i was given a lot of responsibility that i found very enjoyable and engaging.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I felt that my placement really did give me a great example of life working in business in the city and I cherish the experience and equally benefit from all the trainning and the skills that i learnt there. It really made me want to do it all again and i feel it had really built up my confidence and my abilities to a new level.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Everyone was very nice and it was a very social office
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The placement was set up very well offereing a good overall insight into the company and its goals, gave the interns projects together which meant that we worked with people from other areas of the comapny other than our own, and the whole experience made you feel very comftable right away.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Everything that I felt that I should know was taught to me during the placement.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- National Travel
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I really feel like I could work for them and will be applying for the graduate scheme and hope that my acheivements during my intership should really help my chances.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The many projects that we did together made us work and communicate a lot. It made us learn a lot about each other and we found ourselves going out together outside of work a common weekly event.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I socialised a lot within the area and it was very easy to. London is not the cheapest place to socialise and have a good time in but it is one of the best places.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
It was very good fun working in the heart of the city as there are always things to do.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
A lot of the things that we did were intiated by us. But the initial communication and socials were strongly encouraged in the intership program.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Hiscox is a great place to work. The experience will change you into a confident, more efficient and responsible character who is both crdible and approachable. The people there are always happy to help and give you their time. Being a business where communication can make or break a deal, socials and communication are strongly encouraged and help you to get the most out of the experience and interact with other members of the team. I really have no critisism of how they do things in the placement or as a company and they truly do meet with their fine reputation as an international insuracne comapny.
