Job Title: Summer Intern - Infrastructure
Overall Rated 6.9
★★★★★★★☆☆☆
The Role
- Role Description
Working between IT Infrastructure and Procurement I took part and assisted in various projects. Most projects are more than 2 months length so didn't get my own personal one.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I really enjoyed this placement compared to my previous placements. The company and HR make you feel valued and involved.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone I work with are understanding, approachable and very helpful when asked.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Obviously my managers are busy majority of the time however if I have any questions they have made time to quickly point me in the right direction.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Like any job there were ups and downs, being here for only 2 months limits what you can do for projects however I assisted on the majority and when I had done that I could always go and request more work.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Like above being here for only 2 months limits what you can do for projects as there is no point starting and leaving. However I have had quite a lot of pressure on some urgently required documents.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Because of the management style of the placement I think I can apply the logic and manner in which I have carried out my work into my placement. For the subjects it hasn't been that useful.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Like most work places can be quiet but there has been some good banter and chat between everyone.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Very well. HR did a great job and also provided plenty of opportunities to socialise and improve our knowledge of the industry.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Had a 2 day crash course on trading before starting placement which was a nice extra as it was all pretty new to me. Also provided elearning opportunities for you to further your knowledge in a variety of subjects.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Travel loan
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Potentially either you could get a gradjob or fast track from working with RBC as they are a rapidly expanding company. However will have to wait 2 weeks after the placement to find out!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Yeah it was good plenty lunches and drinks after work however commuting into London meant late night socialising generally had to finish early so as not to miss the last train home.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Commuting = pricey but cheaper than living in london. Otherwise London = even more expensive.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
City centre with lots of locations only a short bus/bike/train or walk away however can get expensive.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Minimal, some social events but sure this would change if a full time employee.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Summer internships are a great step toward getting a possible graduate job. Would highly recommend!
