The Role
- Role Description
Worked in the Finance division where I helped out with adhoc tasks such as setting up new spreadsheets, editing financial reports and so on. I also undertook a 'project' which was essentially a data matching/analysis exercise. Gained a good insight into the main objectives of the team.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Good job done by HR - I feel the programme was well-structured and this prevented divides forming between interns in different divisions unlike some banks.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I don't think 8 weeks is long enough to be integrated fully as a team-member. I struggled initially as my desk was separated from the rest of my team. In general, however, colleagues were very friendly and welcoming, inviting me out for lunch and drinks numerous times.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Management/Supervisors were extremely approachable, providing feedback and answering queries where necessary.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Mostly not very busy, plenty of time for lunch, e-learning and networking. Perhaps I could have asked for additional work during the quieter periods, however, knowing the team had specifically asked for an intern I do feel they could have utilised me more.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I had a project to which I contributed, presented and reported my findings, having being assisted throughout by another employee on the floor. Not sure I will be here long enough to see the impact and consequences of my project.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The regular HR correspondence and review process allowed me to ascertain how my colleagues perceived me on a personal and professional level, which, in future, will no doubt enable me to develop and progress. Technical knowledge will unlikely be helpful in my degree studies however it has highlighted a need to expand on the skills I do already have e.g. extend programming experience to incorporate VBA.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The floor was very quiet most of the time, so it was quite intimidating initially.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Very well organised.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Compulsory elearning and lunch and learn sessions, along with structured review processes suggests the company invested heavily in our training and development.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- There were no perks with this internship
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
RBC Capital Markets is definitely a firm with huge potential. Speaking to current graduates, the general vibe is that there is a great opportunity to learn, develop, and progress, whilst contributing to the success of the firm.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Good bunch of interns. Obviously some don't want to socialise amongst their peers but the majority did. Regular after-work drinks, nights out and weekend events took place.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Reasonable.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
In the City, so plenty of chains, bars offering happy hours and traditional pubs.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Not really. Events such as the corporate challenge and the RBC Summer Party were not available/marketed to the interns. Interns socialised amongst themselves most of the time, which was good.
