Job Title: Manufacturing Engineering Summer Intern
Overall Rated 9.3
★★★★★★★★★☆
The Role
- Role Description
Identify and implement improvements within the Manufacturing Engineering function
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The work was engaging and interesting; I was given the opportunity to make a real difference to the way the engines get physically validated. There are lots of other interns too, so it's very social.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Really supportive and friendly team. As is the case with all large companies, there were times when I felt less important or valued, but considering the size of the organisation, they made a real effort to integrate me into the team.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My manager was off sick for much of my internship, but when he was here, he was really good at setting objectives and discussing my progress.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I determined my own workload - there was no shortage of work if I wanted it. I think at R-R you are more expected to manage your own work and decide what you have time to do and what you don't. It's good that they place that trust in you.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given quite a core problem to solve; my work was certainly useful. The summer interns are only there for 10 weeks though, so not everyone will be able to find a task they can really get stuck into.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Certainly a useful experience; it gave me degree some real perspective. Rolls-Royce are an industry leader so there's nowhere better to develop your skills in such a high-profile setting.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It was good fun, although perhaps not so much as a smaller company. Since there are lots of other interns and grads, there are loads of social events discounted by R-R outside work which is good. I met some really cool people.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
HR are pretty good on the whole. It's more tricky to get something sorted out if paperwork goes missing etc. In terms of organising the placement, no problems at all. Just don't expect to know what you're doing before you start!
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Lots of training courses were available. There's also very-much an emphasis on how your career will progress, should you choose to return as a grad. There are lots of opportunities
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- National Travel
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Above 25 days holiday
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Considering how interesting the work can be, the starting salary as a grad is largely unbeatable for engineering (£26.2k). The job security is pretty good, plus there's a £2k welcome bonus and a £1.5k final year busary for returning students. All-in-all, it's a very attractive prospect, given how much I've enjoyed the work.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Lots of other interns and grads who regularly organise social events, many of them subsidised by the company.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Bristol is a vibrant city with so much going on. Filton (North Bristol, where R-R is) is less attractive, but very cheap.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Again, R-R is based outside the city in Filton (around 10/15mins taxi ride) but Bristol itsself has some quality nightlife.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Loads of different charities, sports clubs, social events and societies. No shortage for those who wish to get involved.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
It's a great company to work for, with loads of opportunies. For those coming from a small company, they might find it a bit of a shock at first, not knowing everyone you come into contact with. It's great for interesting work and exciting opportunities though.
