The Role
- Role Description
Reviewing of different engineering processes that take place around a shipyard
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The work i was given was very enjoyable, though there were a few times where i wasn't given much work to complete.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
All my collegues included me in their work and asked me to help out when they needed it.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
The support and guidence was fantastic they helped me settle in really well and told me what to do when i was struggling to understand etc.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Some days i didnt get a lot to do, this was mainly when the people set me work were busy themselves or on holiday.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given individual tasks to complete very often, i had to find out information from various sources and present my findings to collegues.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The experience i have gained has been invaluable. It has given me more than an insigtht to what to expect after i have finished my degree. It will give me a head start on others who havn't had the experience when starting in the working world. It also looks fantastic on my CV for future employment.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Everyone in my office got on really well and the atmosphere was always upbeat! I was included straight away and i got on really well with everyone.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The placement setup was fantastic. We were well looked after the whole time, everything was organised well and we were made to feel part of the company. All the summer placements got opportunitys to meet with each other to discuss what they have been doing and this really helped.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
We were payed very well for students! We were given tours of the site and many people gave up their work time to show us what they did. In my view the company invested a lot in us, and i am definately going to apply to come back in the future.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I have already been offered a summer placement for next year and we have been talked through the application process for the industrial and graduate schemes. the company has been sold very well to us and i would be very happy to come back.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The summer placements, industrial placements and graduates all set up some social activities and as a summer placement i was invited to attend them all, of which there were many! Also my office collegues had a few socials in my time here and i was included in them all and thouroghly enjoyed all of them!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I lived with my parents during my placement so i didnt have to pay rent! The north west must be one of the cheapest places in the country and there are plenty of supermarkets you can pick cheap things up. The beer is cheaper than anywhere i have been in this country too!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
There are some good bars and clubs around and can have a good night at not so much cost. Though the number of students out is very low. The average age can be quite high!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There were plenty of socials put on to get involved in, such as paintballing and go-karting plus nights out. There were opportunities to play sport as well, the office played a couple of football games whilst i was there which i got involved in.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
