The Role
- Role Description
Banking Department Intern. I have daily tasks and 3 projects spread out over 4 different teams to do.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I enjoy my job, I am given responsibility to manage my workload which I like. I feel like the projects I am doing are useful for the teams I am working in.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I am helping with daily tasks, whilst a lot of the department are on summer holidays etc. I feel like I am helping by taking some of the work off their hands. Also, I have already seen how the projects I am working on have helped the department.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My managers are always there to help when needed and give guidance on my projects. They also allow you to get on with your work, it is up to me to schedule time with them if there are any problems with my projects.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
At the beginning, things were slow as I didn't fully grasp what I was trying to achieve with my project. Now, I know what the end outcomes of my project should be and have plenty of work to keep me busy each day.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I have responsibility to get in touch with the right people, and to manage my workload effectively.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Although I am still doing my internship, I feel it will be very beneficial for me when I start university again this October, especially in Accountancy modules.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It is quiet so I can get on with my work easily. People are friendly and there is always an interesting conversation to break up the day!
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
My projects were a bit unclear at the beginning, but it was up to me to decide where I wanted to go with one of them as the manager didn't know what to expect, because it was something completely new to the department.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I've been trained how to use SAP, the company's financial tool, something which would be very beneficial if I were to get a full time job here. I've learnt a lot about the way Procter and Gamble operate and do business. Team members and managers have spent as much time as needed so that I could learn the skills I needed to complete my projects.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I have to do a final presentation at the end of the internship, in front of my managers, team members and recruitment staff. If all goes well - hopefully I will be offered a job for after I graduate.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
There were 4 interns like me this summer and from the start we have been there to support each other and talk about our projects, even though we are in different departments. The intern group, who gave us our induction invited us on nights out and always were happy to help if we needed anything.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Newcastle is a great city for nightlife and going out...not very expensive depending on where you go!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
This placement is in a buiness park.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There are lots of clubs like the sports and social club where you get good discount on concerts etc. There is also a discount card for the whole business park which has sporting acitivites.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
This is not a normal internship making coffe all day, you will feel like part of the team you are working in and are not treated like an intern. Also, the projects you work on are things which are beneficial to your team.
