The Role
- Role Description
Cutting sample, cutting samples, cutting samples!
Tracing patterns, running errands, cleaning, organisational tasks- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The tasks were repetitive and often we weren't learning anything
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
It felt like our time was not valued. Because there were so many interns and the studio was quite disorganised most days we waited around a long time to be assigned a task. Then suddenly at 6pm there would lots to do and we all had to stay back
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
It felt like we were regarded as free labour rather than apprentices who were giving up our time to learn.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Soem days there were up to 15 interns, there were not enough jobs to do.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Initiative was neither encouraged or rewarded
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
We learnt about the day to running of a studio, training in cutting and some pattern cutting
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
A complete mess! There were far to many interns.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- There were no perks with this placement
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I think most of the full time staff gained their positions through internships. However giving how badly organised their internship program is, I cant imagine working there!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The other interns fun and keen to socialise.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
There are lots of cheap options Shoreditch
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
The location is great, close to Shoreditch, Hoxton and Dalston
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
The full time staff were happy socialise outside of work with the interns
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Many interns were told they would be working in "design" or "patterncutting" or "print" but generally we were all doing the same work. If you are interested in a specialised internship this is not the place for you. The staff were, for the most part, very nice and friendly but the placement program is so badly run the opportunities to learn much were limited
