The Role
- Role Description
Servicing incoming trades and maintaining coupon payments. Using Swift to make payments to counterparties and send out claims to counterparties who owed monies. Taking part in a project with RBC Sydney, which involved sending them a spreadsheet of all our current open positions. Taking part in corporate actions involving the conversion of bonds from 144A to REGs, which also made up much of the internship.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I learnt so much from my placement and although I was specifically on the fixed income, corporate actions desk I managed to gain an overview of the entire bank and how it worked. Mainly because of the lunch and learn sessions that were coordinated between HR and all of the different divisions within RBC. My specific desk placement was very engaging and enjoyable, my team were helpful right from the offset and I feel that I made a positive impact.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
The work I was doing was vital and quite important and I got the feeling that my colleagues appreciated what I was doing. It eased up the workload for them and they were able to get more done in their respective areas.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
The support given by my supervisors was good at the beginning, but I feel that as the internship went on the support lessened. It was still there but I was expected to get on with the work that I had to do, which helped in strengthening the different processes I had to do.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Every day was different, on the 15th and 25th of every month we were typically busy because those are big coupon payment dates. Apart from that, some days were busy some were quiet, it really did vary.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Making payments was of quite importance because we had to ensure that the right claims
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Working with bonds aided me in my banking and finance module at university
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Life in the office was never dull, my team were lively and conversation was always flowing.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The internship was fun and active. Aside from the lunch and learn sessions which allowed us to interact with different areas of the bank. We also had a chocolate challenge and a city tour.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
It was quite a struggle to get the systems set up at the beginning of the internship but as I got up and running everything became smooth.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- There were no perks with this internship
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
If I secure an offer, I will definitely be back!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Interns went out to nightclubs almost every Friday and there were ample opportunities to go out drinking or socialising with my team.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Not that bad considering we were in the city centre.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Lots of bars and pubs, a few nightclubs within close proximity.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Lots of opportunities.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Definitely get the application in early!
