The Role
- Role Description
I am working with Amey for a total of 12months. I am working in different areas throughout my placement and changing these areas quarterly. I am currently working in the Customer Service and Communications area and will soon be in the Human Resourse area. After that first 6months i will change again.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I am only 6weeks into my current job, but so far i have enjoyed it. The work has been fulfilling and i have thrived in the job role set out for me.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I feel a strong part of the team. The office and surroundings i work in offer good support and have an excellent team ethic.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My current line manager has offered me help whenever i've needed it. They like me to get on with the job at my own pace of work and if i have a problem i see them, i am not specifically man managed.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
It is different every day. Some days will fly by and feel like i am working for 10 minutes. Others can take a fair bit longer, maybe because you have to complete work that you may not feel that passionately about. I love that it's different every day.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
A great deal. I was thrown right in the deep end so to speak and i have enjoyed that. They have treated me like a full member of their team and given me work and assignements to do from the first day.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Having only been in the job for 6 weeks it is of course to early to tell. However the skills i have picked up in the past at uni and work have helped me in this job so far, so i am sure this year will help me significantly in my future studies both at uni and work.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
There is some cracking banter at work, and a very relaxed atmosphere; which frankley was not what i was expecting. Everyone here are commited to getting their work done, however they always leave time for a good chat and a laugh - a perfect balance!
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
I believe that this is the first time a placement has been conducted in this current office. They have been very accomadating of me, and treated me like a new member of staff. The meetings i have held with my manager have been very helpful and they are driven towards helping me as an individual and not just using me as another cog of the machine.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
As mentioned previously they have treated me like any other employee. I have been given a company phone and laptop and they have offered me expences when neccesary, not to mention a competitive salary.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Company Parties/Events
- Above 25 days holiday
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I believe that the graduate scheme at Amey is very well respected. If the oppurtunity comes to work for the company again, im sure i will think strongley about it!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
I am the only student here, however there are two employees that are on the graduate scheme. This however has not been a problem for me as i have settled very well.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I am living at home, so the only expense i have is petrol. This has been rather high as i live an hour away, but i am definelty saving money. The town is very historic and rather expensive, but it's easy to save the cash! I have given a high score because in the long run i will save money.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
I hav yet to taste the nightlife as i live an hour away and it is difficult to accomodate it. It wasn't something that i thought i would be rating as i new i would be living at home!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There hasn't been a great deal going on, the occasional drinks party and seasonal nights out. It is difficult to arrange as a lot of people commute to work, so it's finding time to accomodate everyone.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The placement scheme is fantastic as they let you work around what skills and objectives you set out for yourself. They are very flexible with how and where you work and have helped me in every way possible. I wouldn't recommend this placement to anyone who wants to work in a large office with hundreds of employees as this company has tens of contracts accross the country so it is very spread out. However there is an HQ so im sure there is an oppurtunity to work there if you desire. I asked to stay in the South West and they have let me do that with great ease!
