Company Sector
Job Title: Programmer / Analyst
Overall Rated 6.0

The Role
- Role Description
during my industrial Placement I had two very different roles. My first role was based on a banking project for CLS (Continuous Link Settlement), my job title was a Test Analyst. The role comprised of writing tests in XML to test the validity of the banking system that was being built for CLS I would then analyse the results to look for anomalies. My second role consisted of working for a building and construction company called Taylor Wimpey. My day to day duties were mainly data mining and analysing data that needed to be collated for various parts of the business.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I liked the variety of job roles available to me. I thought this gave me a chance to work in different sectors of the company and with clients.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Starting and being known as an Industrial Placement meant that a number of colleagues would pass down repetitive work
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I was allocated a general manager that would give me guidance on a daily basis and a staff manager who managed my general progress throughout the year.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Due to the nature of consultancy, this depended on the number of contracts that Logica had acquired. The first six months were very busy whereas the second six months, same days were frantic others I was doing very little.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
My responsibility was limited due to my position as an Industrial Placement student. Both of the projects I joined were near completion, which made it even more difficult to gain greater responsibility.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I believe the skills I learned on the CLS banking project have added to my interest within the Financial Services sector. Due to me working on this project I have decided to base my dissertation on an area of banking.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
I worked in an open plan office due to working for a consultancy company. This meant employees would come and go throughout the day.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
I think the placement scheme was set up efficiently. people were always helpful if you needed to ask them something. Industrial Placement students were given the same responsibilities as graduates.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Training was on the job. I would have liked to be given the opportunity to go on a few training courses to expand my skill set.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- Above 25 days holiday
- Working from home
- Travel loan
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Due to the current uncertainty with regards to company restructuring activities that are currently taking place, I am uncertain about future employment prospects, in addition to the scale back in intake for graduate positions.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
There was a monthly get together for Industrial Placements and Graduates.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I lived with my parents and worked in London which is where I am from. If you are moving to London you need to take the high cost of living and socialising into context.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Living and working in one of the most vibrant cities has its benefits. There is everything that you could want within a city.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There was a sports and social club that gave reductions on a number of events organised by Logica.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
A placement not only gives you essential work experience when you finish university, but it makes you think about your possible career options upon graduation.
