The Role
During my time with Boots Portsmouth, I was given important roles in dealing with customers in the pharmacy daily. I was able to use what I have learnt from the university to apply it when dealing with clients' problem and also learnt from my supervisor and colleagues who gave me full support during my time working in the pharmacy. Also, I had the chance to meet up with other Pharmacy Interns from other university during the study day which is good networking for me as a student who will be working in this field for the future.
I was given full support from my supervisor as well as my colleagues during my 1 month placement in Boots. They will educate me on how to deal with customers on different situations and also gave me some extra knowledge on indications and contra-indications on drugs which I have never heard from in the lecture. Also, they will share their personal knowledge and experience to me which I find it beneficial for my future as a Pharmacist.
The management is very supportive to the the interns. They treat interns as their own full time staff and gave a lot of confidence in them. My store manager would frequently check on my progress and gave feedback based on my weekly performance.
Monday would be the busiest day of the week as the store and surgery are not opened on Sundays. I will be having different kind of tasks daily from attending customers' needs to heading to the Surgery to hand in a repeat prescription and collect a "Green Form" from staff in the Surgery. I felt this is beneficial to me as a student.
I was treated as if I am a full time Pharmacist and given a some great responsibility to deal with customers' needs. One of my responsibilities is to advice the customers on what kind of medication they should consume after they given details of their sickness.
I feel I have received a lot in terms of medical knowledge and working experience while working in Boots which is beneficial to my year 3 Pharmacy degree course in university. I have also learnt a lot from the Study Day organized by Boots.
The Company
The atmosphere in the Pharmacy I worked in was very good, well organized. This gives us the opportunity to have a better working relationship.
The overall work placement is set up excellently. The store manager would bring me around the pharmacy to meet every staff the first time I report to work to make me feel comfortable working there. Besides that, other programs for interns are also well organized.
I have learnt a lot when dealing with different kinds of situations such as customers' needs and advice to them which I find it very beneficial for my studies. Besides that, in terms of personal development, I have found some improvement in my communication skills when dealing with customers daily.
Boots will be a good company to work for when a students graduate from their university as they will give them a good and proper training to prepare them to work as a responsible Pharmacist in the future. I seriously hope to get a graduate job with them upon graduation.
The Culture
Some the us will sometimes meet up or have dinner together after work to discuss and share what we have learnt from our day to day work experience. By sharing it out, we get to know more from what other people has been doing.
The cost of living is normal as I live and study in Portsmouth as the rental is not as high as London's. Socialising in Portsmouth does not really cost that much as well if we know how to control our budget.
As my pharmacy is located some distance away from the city centre, thus the nightlife in the area I worked is not that great as we will need to travel to the city to enjoy the nightlife.
As mentioned in the previous section, some the us will sometimes meet up or have dinner together after work to discuss and share what we have learnt from our day to day work experience. By sharing it out, we get to know more from what other people has been doing. We still keep in touch after the internship.
