The Role
- Role Description
During my three weeks in the department I took on a number of activities. I undertook a range of research tasks, from simple questions to more complex ones which involved reading cases, looking up guidance documents and legislation. I was even able to attend a meeting with a very important client and take notes. As my time drew on I was involved in more practical work, I drafted documents as well as helping to support the team in preparing documents for the clients to reevaluate the properties they held.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
It was very tough and challenging but incredibly enjoyable, this was aided by the social events and importantly the individuals I was surrounded by. The vacation schemers were great fun, as were the members of the firm I was able to meet.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
As I took on more practical tasks I actually enabled my colleagues to meet deadlines that they otherwise would not have been able to. I felt I was truly valued.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I had an excellent supervisor, regardless of how busy she was, she was never too busy to hear my questions or support me on my work. Indeed at points I had to remind her how busy she was and that I didn't want to waste her time with some of my work!
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I was incredibly busy throughout my time, but this meant the time went by very quickly. At times I felt incredibly busy but this was because of the extra project and social events, however merely required managing to balance your time.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Quite a lot of responsibility, my research was valued and I was trusted with a range of work.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I learnt a lot of basic skills, how to balance tasks, how to say no to work when I had too much on. On a more specific note I had practice on research, writing memos, letters and I felt each time I did one piece of work I learnt from it.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It was an incredibly busy office which meant there wasn't much time to have fun, but the members of staff got along very well and were very friendly.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
I thought the experience was very well organised, I knew exactly where to be and what I was doing. This was all scheduled in advance so I could schedule my workload around it. However it was not too organised, there was scope to do things of your own.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
They spent two days inducting us so that we could start smoothly. We also spent a lot of time with a range of members of the firm, so I felt their time was really invested in us.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I really enjoyed my time in the organisation and the people I met. If I get offered a job I would take it without hesitation.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Everyone seemed to meet up quite a lot, but it was not so excessive that it left you feeling drained.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Quite expensive, however that may be the fact it is London as opposed to the North where I'm used to spending time.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
There are a number of bars to go to in the area around the offices.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
On the vacation scheme there were many scheduled activities outside of work. If I had the opportunity to work for the firm there would be a great deal, depending on which activities you preferred to take up.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
An enjoyable but challenging experience, necessary to do to gain a true experience of the firm.
