The Role
- Role Description
Using business analytical software to identify problems experienced in the purchase to payment process over a 6 month period. Researching into the problems by communicating with sites in various countries, including purchasing department and factories receiving goods. Creating solutions to the problems found and communicating and presenting these solutions to other departments with the hope to roll out solutions to prevent problems in other departments.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I believe that my internship at P&G was hugely valuable and undoubtedly provided me with some invaluable business experience having come from a non- business related background. I was given an entire project to work on independently, but always with help from colleagues when needed. It was a great experience to be given a project which had the potential to have real positive effects on business and where I was able to present new findings which would help other colleagues.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
All colleagues were very helpful and open when I needed help in understanding processes in order to be able to identify problems and create solutions. Furthermore, everybody in my team made me feel like a real part of the team straight away, in spite of being a short term intern. I formed some great friendships inside and outside of my team and am yet to find a P&G employee that isn't open, helpful and friendly.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I had weekly meetings with my manager to discuss my findings and progress, but my manager was always there if i had any questions outside of this meeting time. Furthermore, there were always several people that I could go to for help if needed and P&G also have a buddy system where a relatively new employee introduces you and incorporates you into your team, as well as organising activities with your team and with other interns throughout your internship to make you feel a real part of the company.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I was given a project with a good amount of work which also allowed for for further research. I greatly enjoyed my project and so I chose to spend extra time researching problems and solutions but at the same time had an excellent work/life balance.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
In my opinion, I was given the perfect amount of responsibility. I was given a project which had the potential to yield real business results and to find out information which would help others their projects. I was given the freedom to contact people from many different departments in order to aid my research and understanding and come up with thorough solutions.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Having come from a non-business related background, my internship at P&G gave me lots of invaluable professional experience. It also showed me how my languages could be useful in a business environment and has given me excellent problem solving skills, interpersonal skills and taught me about business etiquette and language for the future. I will always value my internship at P&G and believe that it has set me up for my future career.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The atmosphere was very welcoming and although it was a good working environment there were also many rooms and areas which would allow for meetings, chats and break time with relaxing areas with games consoles, drinks machines, fruit and sofas. People were not constantly checking up on what I was doing, as the atmosphere seemed to be relaxed, as long as the work gets done on time and to the very best standard. I found this to be a very productive atmosphere.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
From the second that I arrived to the second that I left my internship was extremely well structured and allowed me to meet new employees, learn lots about the company and the markets in which they work. My managers and supervisors also set up time for me to meet with people in management and to present to other teams and bosses. I was never at a loose end and was always very clear about what it is that I was supposed to do, but was also given the freedom to set up meetings with others at any time if I desired.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
My internship was only 10 weeks long, nevertheless during the first week we had several training courses for bookkeeping, use of IT software etc and also had meetings set up with people from various departments to give me insight and understanding into the different operations and processes happening on a day to day basis. I also had weekly appraisals from my manager and buddy.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
The internship was a great opportunity and I received a job offer at the end. However, for reasons of location, remuneration and future career prospects, I have chosen to take up a job offer elsewhere on a graduate scheme in London.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
There were social events organised both with fellow interns as well as with my team. I greatly appreciated the events with my team since it made me feel like a real part of the team and not just as a temporary intern. I formed lots of great friendships during my time as an intern.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Newcastle is a great city and the cost of living and socialising is very reasonable.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
There is always something to do in the city of Newcastle.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There were often social events outside of work and opportunities for sports teams. There could possibly be more opportunities for music/drama for those who are not so sporty like myself.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I would rate my internship on the whole 10 out of 10. It gave me lots of invaluable skills and experiences and the people are extremely friendly and always willing to help. They also offer constructive criticism which is very helpful. One remark about the possible job offer at the end is that it would be more attractive if the offer afterwards was within a graduate scheme with the opportunity to work in various departments and I believe that the remuneration/salary package was disappointing/less than expected.
