The Role
- Role Description
I worked within my department - the Funds and Indirect Real Estate team - and completed tasks set for me by different members of the team. An example of the work would be filling out Companies House forms; drafting letters to other solicitors; compiling research notes; and attending client phone conferences and meetings.
As well as departmental work, we were all assigned a project work for Project: Nabarro. This involved group work and individually assessed pieces spread out over the three weeks. Having the extra duties meant that I never had a quiet moment and constantly had something to be getting on with.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The placement was brilliantly structured, informative and with plenty of 'real work' for us to be getting involved in. The firm takes great pride in the training of its employees and this is greatly reflected in the quality of the three-week summer scheme. Everyone in the firm was eager to get to know about us and to get us involved.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
The great thing about Nabarro's placement is that you are in one department for the whole three weeks, which means that you have the chance to build real working relationships with your department. I was given trainee-level work and received insightful feedback when something could have been improved upon. Even if I wasn't doing work for people, everyone was already ready to have a chat and discuss the latest news with me.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
You effectively have two supervisors: an associate and a trainee. Both were always ready to talk/answer any questions (no question was ever too stupid)/give me good work/or even just take me out for lunch!
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
We were kept very busy throughout the placement with departmental work and Project Nabarro to balance; however, the life of a trainee solicitor will never be quiet, so I think the amount of work given to us was a genuine and honest reflection of the pace of the careers we will be entering into.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given certain tasks such as taking the only file note on a client meeting and presenting it to the partner, or writing an informative note, which would eventually be sent straight to the client, so responsibility was high. However, this went hand in hand with good supervision and someone would always be there to answer questions and correct my (many) errors! I would say there was a good deal of responsibility for the level that we were at.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Experience in any office is good for general life and inter-personal skills. Nabarro's session on 'how to network' I think was very insightful and the presentations we had to do were all great experiences at how to handle oneself in a professional atmosphere and they were brilliant confidence boosters.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
As said adove, everyone was really friendly, supportive and welcoming.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Very - we were kept informed of everything we would be doing, even before starting the placement!
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Unsure as of yet, but fingers are tightly crossed!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
If I wasn't out to lunch with someone from my department, then there was always a fellow vac schemer to join for lunch. There were a lot of socials organised for us as well during the scheme, so we spent a good deal of time getting to know each other outside of the office too.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Better than being in the City possibly, but still London prices!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Great - Holborn is brilliant for theatre/museums/restaurants. Soho, only a few minutes away, has some great bars and music venues as well as restuarants. Covent Garden is just on your door step as well.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
The firm does have its own sports clubs, but we were kept very busy with our ogranised social events and so did not have much time to get involved. We were encouraged to do so though if we wanted to.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The numerous early morning breakfast meetings we had to attend were compensated for by giving us all a full english fry-up. Highly enjoyable!
