The Role
- Role Description
During my placement I worked in the Insolvency and Banking team. I was involved on a number of matters including loan agreements, winding-up procedures and monitoring administration progress reports. I carried out a mixture of tasks involving research (both looking at recent updates to the law as well as complex case law and legal articles), reviewing progress reports sent by administrators and working out what aspects of the report were useful to our clients; reviewing completion documents and checking every party had signed in the correct places; completeing post completition tasks; and carrying out company searches on companies house. Alongside the main tasks there was a business project to be completed. This involved producing a 20 minute presentation in groups of 5 and then drafting a letter of legal advice to our clients.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I really enjoyed my placement. I particularly liked the fact that you stayed in one department for 3 weeks. This gave me a great chance to get to know the team and get involved in some large scale matters.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I carried out work for a large number of people who always thanked me for the work. I really got the impression that the work I was completeing was valuable to the progression of the matter.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My supervisor checked how everything was going pretty much everyday! I received a lot of feedback throughout the placement so I knew what aspects of my work I could improve on. At the end of the scheme we had a more detailed feedback session which gave me a good overview of what everyone in the team thought of my work.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I found the workload very varied but I think this reflects the fact that the team is generally a lot quieter in the summer. There were a lot of people on holiday when I was in the department so there perhaps weren't as many people around for me to get work off. That said, the work I did get was challenging and interesting so I could really get my claws into it.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Obviously as an intern everything you do is double checked by your supervisor, however I felt I was given a certian degree of responsibility. The research I carried out was directly used making it really important that I referenced everything properly and ensured there were no gaps. Furthermore, I had the chance to check through completion documents to ensure they were signed properly. This felt like a lot of responsibility as if I was missed anything the completion could not go ahead!
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I was initially concerned before starting the placement that I would struggle considering my non-law background. However, in reality it really didn't matter at all. The most important thing I learnt was how to go about legal research and I think this will be very helpful when I progress to my GDL.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The atmosphere in the office definitely lived up to all the Nabarro hype! I was immediately welcomed into the group and included on all team social events throughout my three weeks. Everybody was interested in giving me some work so I was able to meet and chat to everyone in the nearby area!
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The palcement was incredibly well organised. Unlike a lot of schemes all the information was sent out in the post about 2 weeks before the placement actually started. This was fantastic as it meant I could actually plan my three weeks rather than just waiting until the first day to discover that you have a drinks evening that night. I also found out the department I was going to be working in the week before I started and the name of my supervisor. This was so helpful as I could do some research before I started. When we arrived we had about 2 full days of induction. This was great because we really got to know our colleagues on the scheme and were able to get to grips with the IT systems before thrown into the office environment. Throughout the placement I was impressed by the level of thought that had gone into the scheme!
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
We had extensive knowledge centre training in the first two days. What differed at Nabarro was the huge amount of training we received in using Westlaw, Lexis and PLC. This was so useful as these sites are the one thing that Vac Schemers will probably use the most throughout their placement.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I think Nabarro would be a great firm to work at and all but one fo the current trainees are staying on!
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
As a group of Vac Schemers we all got along really well. There was a constant email thread throughout the scheme organising ad hoc lunches, drinks and dinners!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Being in Bloomsbury, the cost of food and drinks in pubs etc is quite high. The subsidised canteen meant buying lunch was a lot cheaper!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
There was a huge selection of pubs around Lambs Conduit st!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There were a number of sports fixtures arranged outside of work that we were all welcome to get involved in. We also had a series of breakfast meetings where we had a chance to meet and chat to members of the firm who we may not otherwise come across.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The Nabarro placement at first seems very intense, but the HR staff and all the other summer students make it a really positive experience! I would recommend it to anyone interested in gaining a valuable experience whilst having a great time!
