The Role
- Role Description
attending client meetings and writing up the notes; legal research; drafting letters; analysing contracts; updating document lists; a dragons-den style project in teams with other students.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Outstanding supervision. Good work. Great people. Good social/work balance.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I got on incredibly well with my team, they seemed genuinely pleased to have me with them and were generous with their time and their thanks.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My supervisors were wonderful - they gave me interesting work, helpful feedback, always explained the context of a piece of work, made sure I had a suitable level of work.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
As expected in the legal profession, there are always slight ups and downs, but my team did very well at keeping me busy and occupied but never overwhelmed.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
A reasonable amount, but not a huge amount, which is the level I think it should be at - as a student with no legal background it would have been terrifying to have high responsibility. however, my research and drafting were checked but often used, and any changes made were always explained to me. also, there were several meetings where I was the main note-taker and thus my minutes of the meeting relied upon.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I think being aware of the practical side of law will help me understand the context of more abstract concepts that I will come across at law school. But again, the focus on the three weeks was doing interesting work and gaining an insight into the firm, not teaching us legal skills.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Busy but friendly. Everyone happy to have a break for a chat or gossip. Everyone welcome to take a decent lunch-break!
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Every aspect was perfectly organised. We recieved a timetable and a personal letter from our supervisors in advance.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
A lot of effort went into training us fully at the start of the placement, to enable us to get the most out of the work. A series of 'breakfast breifings' (complete with a tasty fry-up!) were organised to give us an insight into other areas of the company which we otherwise may not have seen.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Loved the firm, but had to take a job elsewhere for various reasons. In other circumstances I'd have accepted a job with them, most certainly.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
We all got on amazingly - not only in the organised socials, but in lunches together everyday and drinks every friday night.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Holborn, central London = expensive. luckily I lived in London, so rent wasn't an issue. also, most socialising was paid for by the firm!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Central London has plenty to do at night, but again, social activities, apart from our friday night drinks, were all organised, and when there wasn't a social activity people were usually so exhausted they went home!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Discounting the organised social activites, very little. there was the offer of participating in a client cricket match, but that was it...
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Excellent scheme. Very hard work and tense - a packed three weeks. But an excellent insight into the legal profession and a lot of fun. Can't go without saying that the 50-50 chance of a training contract once you are on the scheme is pretty great too! Highly recommended.
