Company Sector
Job Title: Community Coordinator
Overall Rated 7.5

The Role
- Role Description
Managing the social networks for the various online computer games within the company's portfolio. Planning strategies for growth, developing marketing campaigns and engaging with consumers through various promotions and activities.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
From a work perspective the job was very enjoyable and the office, being a casual but professional, was a great atmosphere to work in. From a social perspective there were many company paid social events, the Christmas party being one of the best evenings of entertainment I have ever attended.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
My colleagues clearly demonstrated that they thought I was an asset to the team, and valued my opinion.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My manger was very good in helping me develop various skills over my placement year. Frequent one to one catch ups and personal objective setting were both really useful.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
There was an exceptional amount of work to do at times, especially when I was accountable for competitions as well as social networks.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given the opportunity to be Competitions Lead for 6 months, which was a great opportunity in terms of responsibility and a chance to demonstrate my skills.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The work was very relevant to my degree and I also got the opportunity to develop my design and writing skills for video games by working on various projects for the products. This was probably the most useful part of the placement because I managed to get some design and writing experience on my CV, and that is the career path I wish to take.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The office had a creative and vibrant atmosphere.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The initial training was well structured, and the skills development course was managed well. We had regular presentations by other departments in the company, so we got a wider perspective of the business.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I was given the opportunity to move from the placement team in player support into the Community Management team which is part of the marketing department. This shows the level of trust that Jagex is willing to place in placement students.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Above 25 days holiday
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I have been invited to apply for a position with them at the end of my Uni course
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Due to the nature of the company being an online games company it attracted a lot of people who weren't the most social people in the world. Cambridge hasn't got the best nightlife in the country either.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Cambridge is quite expensive. Social wise if you can meet some students from town that makes things a lot more enjoyable.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Nothing on Loughborough.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There is a football and cricket team but I play rugby so didn't get involved.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
If you want to get into the game design side of things, it's quite hard. Only a handful of us out of the group of 35 or so got the opportunity to actually work on designing for the product. However a lot of people moved around the company, got different jobs and more responsibility. This was quite common this year among the placement students.
