Job Title: Accounts Payable- Customer Service And Accounting Controls
Overall Rated 8.7

The Role
- Role Description
I worked German Head Office Accounts Payable team, functioning as a point of contact between between marketing and corporate teams in Germany and the centralised finance functions in Newcastle.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The placement offered a lot of responsibilty very early on, meaning that although it was very challenging I learned a great deal very quickly, and the programme was very rewarding.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I was treated as a team member from the very start, and got on extremely well with the team, and after a few months, felt that I was performing a critical role.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I met with my supervisor for formal monthly meetings as well as on an ad hoc, more casual basis and was given constant feedback, advice and encouragement on my work. I could also use these meetings to voice concerns and ask any questions that I had.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
The role offered a good degree of flexibility to take up project work once core tasks were completed, meaning that I was never bored or without work to do. This also allowed me to work with other areas of the business which I would not have encountered in my day to day work, giving me a greater level of enjoyment, variety and experience.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
As mentioned, I was given a core area of responsibility which only I was looking after. While this was at times challenging, it gave me a great deal of satisfaction when things went well.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I had already finished my degree when I did the internship, but I did further develop my level of German through daily use. I also developed a basic knowlegde of finance, as well as other practical skills such as problem solving and communication and customer service.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The office was very diverse in both age range and backgrounds, so was very vibrant. There was also a number of daytime activities organised such as a summer fete, and various events around festive periods
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
My start date was much later than the other interns, which could have been better. There was also no set date given for when I would be told as to whether or not I was offered a permanent role at the company.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I was able to attend all in- house training which is open to permanent staff, which varied from people management courses to a book keeping course.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I am currently working at the organisation having been successful on my internship and offered a permanent contract.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
As there were only 3 of us, there were no official social events and we did not organise any.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Very cheap for rent, food and drink for a UK city.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Newcastle has a famous night life, so that is a big bonus!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
I was able to join any sports and social clubs etc
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
As I am still working at P&G, I can say that the internship scheme has improved since I completed it, and is now far better organised and more structured than it already was.
