The Role
- Role Description
I was in the Medical and General Liability group in my first week. On my first day I was asked to review a case that had been ongoing and to give my opinion on what amount we should counter-offer the claimant. It required me to firstly understand the claim, look over documents such as doctors notes and psychiatric reviews, research the costs of certain treatments, calculate interest rates and to challenge the other sides offer. I was then asked to produce a letter which contained my findings and my offer – This was ongoing throughout the week.
I was also asked to assist on taking and writing up witness statements for one of the associates and produced a letter to the witness.
I attended two hearings and was asked to take attendance notes.
I assisted on a court run.
I was asked to research for various different cases.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
A really fun and interesting place to work and the staff at RPC make a great effort to really involve you in everything.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
There wasn't a time during the whole placement that I was left with nothing to do - I was given proper work and involved in the department's cases.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
I think that the firms culture is very unique. The one thing that quickly struck me is that there is a really collaborative element within and across departments. People are constantly bouncing ideas off of each other and helping one another in their work, and I think this reflects the way the firm values team work and also that staff really respect each other. In a similar respect, I feel that the people at RPC are very down to earth and that there isn’t a hierarchical atmosphere – the open plan offices really do make everybody a lot more approachable and I was asked on more than one occasion to attend meetings by partners and associates which I really appreciated.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
There were constant briefings and presentations - associates and partners constantly made sure that we learnt about the firm.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- There were no perks with this insight
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
