About Siemens

As a leading global engineering company, Siemens is behind a diverse range of technologies and services we take for granted in our daily lives across the sectors of Infrastructure & Cities, Energy, Industry and Healthcare – you name it, we’ve probably been involved in it somewhere along the line! We design and manufacture products and systems ranging from traffic lights, wind turbines and superconducting magnets used in medical scanners, through to drives that are behind many of the UK’s manufacturing plants.

Siemens is a global company that employs over 400,000 people in nearly 190 countries worldwide. Siemens Magnet Technologies (SMT), based in Eynsham, Oxfordshire, is part of the Siemens Healthcare Division and is a world leader in the design and manufacture of superconducting magnets for MRI body scanners. Annually, SMT make over 1100 magnets, and a third or all MRI systems in the world contain a magnet made there.

Research & Development Placement

This opportunity is for a 12 month placement in our Research and Development Department, where you will work on a variety of magnet technology and product development projects.

What are my responsibilities?

  • Working as part of a team to support and develop different aspects of superconducting magnet design and manufacture.
  • Working independently on a design project to design and manufacture test facilities to develop the next generation of superconducting magnets. Carrying our experiments, analysing results and reporting on conclusions, both written reports and verbally in meetings.
  • Supporting production on the factory floor.

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • You will be working towards a 2:1 (or above) in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Natural Sciences and be looking to complete a year in industry as part of your degree.
  • You will need strong communication both verbally and in writing.

What else do I need to know?

SMT has a long history of taking students for placement years, and students are given stimulating and interesting projects to work on that are genuinely valued.

Being a placement student at SMT typically involves a mixture of desk based office work and experimentation on the factory floor, with plenty of opportunity to contribute to the direction and scope of your work. Employees have a real sense of pride in their work, and SMT’s success was recently recognised with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, and three best factory awards in 2012.
