About our corporate industrial placements

Our Corporate Industrial Placement offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain experience with a large multinational business. You will have the opportunity to take responsibility which has an effect on the success of your department. With our lean teams you will be given you the chance to develop your skills by putting theory into practise and have support whilst doing so.

BSI (Consumer) – Industrial Placement

Job purpose

  • Support the management of consumer insight with various research projects and monitoring our competitors.
  • Touching all parts of the business, we provide the insights to support fact-based decision-making on products, advertising and schemes.
  • As a customer-led business, BSI department plays a key role in facilitating and setting the business strategy.
  • We achieve this through combining multiple sources of insight: sales performance, customer research, competitor monitoring, economic context.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Responsibility for supporting and implementing research projects. Includes liaising with our external research agencies, our restaurant management teams, franchisees and communicating with project owners.
  • Analysing general and specific consumer behaviours and reporting how this might impact business to key decision makers.
  • Monitoring and recording competitor’s promotional activities and product changes. Support in estimating their impact on McDonald’s business.
  • Providing regular trend updates for key consumer tracking tools that capture brand sentiment, trust and opinion.
  • Responsibility for running an online poll amongst restaurant crew to gain feedback on promotion success and insights for future improvement.
  • Responding to ad-hoc requests for information/data from the Business Strategy and Insight team and other departments across the business.
  • General administrative support of the BSI team.

What you will learn

  • An understanding of how a BSI team works within a ‘blue chip’ multi-national organisation, providing an excellent platform for a career in business strategy and insight.
  • First-hand experience of the relationship between consumer, competitor and company perspectives and how they interrelate to form a business strategy.
  • An understanding of how a major brand understands, defines and addresses customer needs effectively to build a strong and profitable brand.
  • Exposure to the breadth of approaches applied to gather customer research and insight, from defining the issues, to planning the solutions to interpreting and communicating the learning and embedding it within the business.
  • Development of analytical skills and experience of dealing with big data sets and information.
  • Gaining experience in querying the Oracle database through internal business intelligence tools: Business Objects, Microstrategy.

  • Good computer skills, with basic knowledge of Excel and good knowledge of Power Point.

  • Excellent organisational and project management skills
