About BP

Heat. Light. Power. Mobility. BP deliver energy safely to the world. Joining us as a summer intern on our Control & automation engineering programme, you’ll discover how we do it – getting to grips with some of the many processes it takes to turn oil and gas into products you and everyone on the planet depend on every day.

To say these programmes are an inspiring way to launch your career would be an understatement. But exhilarating though they are, they’re really just a starting point for even more amazing discoveries to come.

We are still open for intern applications for 2014.

Overview

Measurement and metering Systems consists of an engineered set of hardware and software controls that are focused on the measurement of the quantity and quality of hydrocarbon production. Measurement and metering engineers apply critical instrumentation used to measure process variables such as Pressure, Temperature, Flow, Level and composition and perform higher level tasks such as calculating flow measurement data for commercial and regulatory use.

Measurement and metering engineers look after sophisticated sensors for fiscal metering and allocation of production, as well as oil reservoir optimisation.

Measurement inaccuracies on a production facility can easily be in excess of $10 million annually in some cases.
Measurement and metering systems are essential to ensuring that the correct production revenues of the operating facilities are accounted and allocated correctly. The energy supplies of whole countries often depend on these facilities, which in turn depend on the Measurement and metering Systems.

Measurement and metering safeguard our operations from business and reputational risk, providing process and production data for control, optimisation and allocation of production revenue.

In many cases the Measurement systems are the basis for meeting international standards, environmental and in-country revenue and taxation regulations. They are tied directly to our license to operate.
Facilities include offshore oil and gas production platforms, petrochemical complexes and pipeline transportation systems.
Measurement and metering engineers also integrate with rotating equipment, Mechanical and Process engineers to name but a few, such is the diversity of Measurement and metering.

Technology constantly changes in the Measurement and metering world and engineers are always reviewing and implementing new innovations in a variety of areas, for example topsides or more sophisticated subsea measurement and metering, flow computers integrated with control systems and quality analysers. It is challenging, but exciting to keep pace with the changes.

Your role and responsibilities

You’ll work on tasks assigned by more experienced engineers and be responsible for problem-solving, feasibility studies, reliability reviews and initiatives which will expose you to field equipment and powerful computers, software and monitoring sensors. Typical job roles include troubleshooting, collating statistical and measurement information, commissioning new equipment, becoming involved in maintenance outages or supporting minor modifications.
You may be part of a multi-disciplinary support team in an advanced collaborative environment, working across video conferencing to support critical operations. Alternatively, you may work on a project to design and build measurement and metering systems using state-of-the-art technology.
