The placement year opportunities are in the London office, which trades through Syndicate AMA1200 at Lloyd’s of London. Our syndicate writes a wide range of insurance classes including property, liability, marine, energy, space, aviation and personal accident. The positions are available to undergraduate students who are interested in spending a year in industry as part of their degree. Throughout the year you will gain experience in the Lloyd’s market and support teams in a number of disciplines. You will have real responsibilities and opportunities to work on projects that have an impact on the business. Your training will be provided on the job. The positions will commence on 1st July 2015 and will finish on 24th July 2016. Argo has a history of favouring returning Placement Students in selection for our Graduate programme.

We currently have opportunities for a one year placement within the Actuarial Department.

Main Purpose of Role

This role will require the successful candidate to work closely with Argo’s reserving, pricing, capital and risk management actuaries. Day to day tasks may include:

  • Collaborating with underwriters to develop pricing models;
  • Supporting the monthly reserving process;
  • Manipulating and enhancing reporting documents; and
  • Collating information for use in meetings and presentations

Reporting Relationships

Successful candidates will work with one or more of the corresponding managers of Argo’s reserving, pricing, capital and risk management actuaries.

Key Accountabilities

Pricing:

  • To work as part of the actuarial team in supporting the underwriting teams develop pricing models within the various divisions (Property, Liability, Specialty and Aerospace).
  • Prepare monthly Performance Management Data Returns for Lloyds of London.
  • Ad hoc tasks as required

Reserving:

  • Aid with the monthly reserving process data preparation
  • Help in the preparation of quarterly reserving report packs
  • Help with the analysis of claims development
  • Ad hoc tasks as required

Capital / Risk:

  • Help in the preparation of the “Own Risk Self Assessment Report” (“ORSA”) on a quarterly basis
  • Help with various other reports – Validation, Actuarial Function throughout the year
  • Analyse and report on risks to which the syndicate is exposed.
  • Ad hoc tasks as they arise

Role Requirements

Skills/Competencies

  • Good team player and ability to motivate others

  • Highly developed numerical and analytical skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise

Qualifications

  • A strong quantitative background in mathematics or natural sciences.
  • A level Mathematics essential – A/A* grade preferred (minimum 360 UCAS points for Actuarial).
  • On track for a minimum 2:1 in a numerically/analytically focused degree. Preferred degree disciplines – Mathematics (with Statistics and/or IT for Actuarial), Physics, Engineering, Economics
  • Advanced IT skills (Programming knowledge e.g. Microsoft “Visual Basic for Applications” preferred) – particularly Excel and Access.
