About Transport for London

No other city is as defined by its transport system as London, with its red buses, black cabs and Tube trains recognised the world over.

We are responsible for the planning and day-to-day to operation of the capital's public transport network, including the Tube, London Overground, the DLR and buses, as well as managing London's main roads and building new infrastructure.

With around 24 million journeys made across our network daily, we do all we can to keep the city moving and make sure the network is safe, reliable and fit for the future.

It’s a big task and we’re looking for skilled, passion-driven people to join our dedicated team of 27,000 employees.

The Role

Our commercial teams support procurement and commercial management across the areas of specialist services, Surface Transport, and Rail and London Underground. These teams work on large and interesting projects which involve strategy, category management, project procurement, contract administration, and supplier relationship management.

You should also be between the second and third, or third and fourth year of a sandwich degree course.

We also look for candidates who can:

• Work on site when necessary
• Have effective written and verbal communication
• Show good, analytical, problem solving and inductive reasoning (ability to deal with ambiguous data) skills
• Embrace change
• Collaborate with colleagues, share your information, knowledge and skills
• Focus strongly on internal and external customers
• Show a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
• Work on your own initiative, seeking out new opportunities for learning, career progression and challenges
• Identify project goals and work towards them
• Demonstrate a structured and methodical approach to tasks, identifying priorities and setting deadlines

Benefits

• Salary - £16,067 (pro rata'd for summer placements)
• Pension options
• Holiday - 30 days, as well as standard public holidays (pro rata'd for summer placements)
• Free travel - A free Oyster card for you, and someone you live with, to use on our entire network

If you buy annual travel tickets to travel outside our network, we'll give you 75% of it back. We can also provide an interest-free loan to buy an annual ticket which we'll then recover from your salary over a period of 10 months

Entry requirement

You must be studying for a 2:1 honours degree. It could be in any discipline, although legal, business or economics-related subjects are particularly welcome.

Application process

There are five stages to the Year in Industry and summer placement applications:

Stage 1 - Online application

You’ll be asked to complete a short, online application to provide us with all your personal details and other information, including:

• An outline of your degree subject/level
• Any relevant modules completed
• Details of any required accreditation

Once we confirm that your degree meets the requirements for the scheme, your application will progress to the next stage.

Stage 2 – Situational Strengths test

The Situational Strengths test presents you with a series of typical scenarios you may encounter during your programme. We want to know how you would respond in these scenarios and will ask you to select from a list of multiple options. This test gives us a better idea about whether you would enjoy working with us, and have the overall strengths to be successful here.

Stage 3 - Online testing

This stage tests your numerical ability, or in the case of the engineering schemes, your inductive ability. If invited to begin the online testing stage, you should complete the test within five days. If you're successful, you'll move on to the next stage.

Stage 4 - Telephone interview

We will always send you an invite ahead of the interview date so you can prepare. Along with competency- based questions, you may be asked questions about the technical and specialist aspects of the scheme, so prepare for this. If you're successful, you'll move on to the next stage.

Stage 5 - Final stages

You will be invited to complete a competency-based interview for the final stage of the process. We will ask a series of questions to give you the chance to tell us about yourself and how well suited to the role you are. There may be other elements in this final stage which will be confirmed closer to the time.
We'll make decisions following this stage about who will be offered the position.

If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.

Closing date: The final closing date is 7th January at 23.59, however we will close schemes when we receive sufficient application numbers therefore we recommend that you apply early.

** Please be aware that you can only make one Year in Industry application per season.
