About Cummins

At Cummins Power Generation we recognise that having experience of the working world during your university degree provides a key insight to the practical application of your learning. We run an exciting 12 month placement where you are given an opportunity to work in a role and on real projects, making a difference in both your team and the company as a whole.

Reporting to the relevant engineering project leader, this role has responsibility for the delivery of engineering tasks and assignments whilst working in the different engineering teams (potentially on a rotational basis) within the Kent Technical Centre. In this role you will apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices in a wide variety of projects to research, design, develop, analyse and release products and subsystems through the product life cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, research and analyse genset power systems and components.
  • Support research and application of alternative generation, waste energy recovery and efficiency improvement technologies to the diesel/gas electricity generating set with a view to improving overall efficiency.
  • Use of engineering tools to analyse engineering problems to identify potential design solutions to resolve internal and external ‘customer’ issues.
  • Assist in creating design specifications considering application, cost, weight, performance, product life, manufacture, assembly and service requirements.
  • Develop and release design solutions in line with Cummins and global design standards/procedures.
  • Verify design using analysis and/or functional testing, interpret results, drive decisions and assess risk.
  • Apply engineering and/or scientific skills and continue to develop experience in creating engineering solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews and safety reviews.
  • Collaborate with other functions (such as Operations, Marketing) to ensure stakeholders requirements are met throughout the design and development process.

Training Provided

  • A comprehensive induction programme as well as role specific training.
  • Individual training to suit particular business skills required by the business or identified by the candidate.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Studying for a Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline
  • Good understanding of design principles for mechanical/electrical products or systems.
  • User level knowledge of relevant engineering software systems.
  • Knowledge of Engineering design standards and processes.
  • Awareness of power generation technologies, engine sub-systems or other related technologies.
  • Interest in renewable energy, energy storage/recovery and alternative fuels (preferred but not essential).
  • Ability to work under own initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Flexible and proactive attitude with a desire to learn and take on responsibility.

To be eligible for our 12 Month work placement you must be a university student who has a placement year option as part of their degree programme. You will spend a year in a specific department to gain real experience in your subject area. You are supported by formal and informal training, and work on projects that add true value to the business.
