Operational risk is defined as the uncertainty that M&G faces in successfully implementing its strategies and objectives. This includes all internal and external events, acts or omissions that have the potential to threaten the success and survival of M&G.

All areas of M&G are exposed to operational risk through the very nature of their day-to-day operations. Any control absence or failure associated with processes, people, systems or any external events can result in financial and/or non-financial consequences to the M&G Group.

Who are the Operational Risk & Governance (ORG) Team?

The Operational Risk & Governance team (ORG) is responsible for operational risk oversight of M&G, seeking to ensure that the company manages these risks in accordance with the expectations of its clients, shareholder and regulators. The team works closely with risk coordinators and management across M&G Business Units and also with Prudential to challenge business units on risk controls and actions and embed the operational risk framework and policies. The team is then responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of these risk management processes, providing a consolidated view and management information to the M&G Risk Director, M&G Group Risk Committee and Prudential Group Operational Risk Committee.

What does an Operational Risk Placement get involved in?

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Build constructive and supportive working relationships with risk coordinators and management across the business
  • Support the review and challenge business unit reports of risk/control issues and actions
  • Support the development, communication and embedding of the M&G Group Risk Framework, policy and guidance to ensure this meets the needs of the Group and minimum standards defined by Prudential Group
  • Support the development and maintenance of risk MI for the M&G Group Risk Committee
  • Prepare ad hoc reports to the M&G Risk Committee as required
  • Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of information systems to support the M&G Risk Framework
  • Support the development of policy governance processes
  • Monitor industry updates and escalate for review as appropriate
  • Develop and maintain the department intranet site

What training is provided?

All placement students will go through a comprehensive training programme which includes workshops on asset management and M&G. These are mostly arranged for the first week of placement and are designed to be suitable for those with and without industry knowledge. You will gain an understanding of the whole spectrum of business areas within M&G further informing your post-university career choices. You will also receive a competitive salary throughout your time at M&G.

Who are we looking for?

Our schemes are open to placement-year students on track for a 2:1 undergraduate degree or higher, from any discipline. An ideal candidate will have minimum 300 UCAS points and the broad skill set needed to match our business.

You will have an appreciation of client, shareholder and regulatory perspectives on Risk and a genuine interest in expanding your knowledge and understanding of the Investment Management industry. You will be a pro-active team player with strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to build effective relationships. You will have strong communication, planning and organising skills.

Our 2015 placement scheme will commence on the 22nd June and will last for 12 months. Our scheme accepts students who are able to do an industrial placement as part of their university degree only.
